Karting in Gran Turismo 5 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Despite our best efforts, we're getting pretty excited about the arrival of Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5. After suffering through years of the company (and the interwebs at large) crying wolf with launch dates, it appears as if we may finally have the game in our hands by the end of this year. There's also some word that the release will coincide with the second coming of various deities. By now, chances are you've heard all about the new race modes available with the next chapter in the simulator franchise, including the addition of NASCAR, but here's one that took us by surprise.

A video has just recently cropped up on YouTube showing what appears to be a kart race in GT5. We haven't heard one way or the other whether we'll be able to slide a shifter through the corners of our favorite Gran Turismo tracks or if this was just some sort of one-off ditty built for a demonstration. That doesn't stop us from hoping for the former, though. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.

All I can say is...Duke Nukem Forever...thats what this game is turning into, by the time this stupid game releases, Forza 4 will be out on the Kinect for the Xbox and this will be old news all over again.

really guy really? are you hoping that this game doesn't come out cause then you'll have nothing to brag about, or are you in the position to not afford both system's, cause i have both and forza and GT5 are no longer in the same category. im sorry if u never played GT before this im sorry if this wait is bothering you but coming from an owner of all forza games and all GT games i think its gonna be an experience everyone who likes racing games has to well experience stop with the Microsoft knob slobbing dude u just sound broke

Though other launch dates were never explicitly confirmed, management did expect this game to be out a long time ago.

Why would an auto enthusiast poo-poo on another great option in racing simulations? You wanna console flame war, head on over to Joystiq.

I'm still waiting for them to release the stupid game, with all the delays and pushed back release dates at the rate they are going Gran Turismo 6 will be out before 5.

      Check out G4...
Kaz confirmed it was originally going in GT6 but some one spilled the bean son it so they included it in gt5, as well as "B Spec" mode which is a sort of RPG style Race team director mode.

Fairly large post about it and other gt5 goodness ( Monza as a track, slue of classic Italian cars ) on G4's Iphone app and the feed.

My biggest gripe is what appears to be the lack of virtual steering wheel movement. The steering wheel animation in the game should reflect the actual angle of the steering wheel you use to play the game. I think it's to accommodate non 900 degree wheels, which is a HUGE turn off for a hardcore racing simulator fan like me.

I won't know about the physics until I drive it but from the video, it looks a bit watered down. Having driven a 40hp shifter kart, actual kart driving is VERY intense, as far as G forces go, and the driver's head in the video just seemed to stay pretty still the whole time from the 3rd person view. A shifter kart is as close at it gets to an F1 car in terms of driving dynamics.

Also, since it's a shifter kart, the shifting animation would be nice, since you shift so much in a shifter kart.

      @Jason

If you pause the video @ 0:05 you will clearly see two people's reflections off of the black screen. One is clearly sitting in a chair holding a wheel.

As for the realism of this simulation it is pretty close to the real experience. Having raced on the Karting Track down here at PBR in West Palm I can tell you that it definitely is like "floaty, like on ice , and pivot point right in the middle". It is very easy to lose control of a kart going that fast like the driver did in the first turn if you are not use to the handling characteristics of a kart.

Ah I see now. The first time I watched it on my phone and didn't catch that.

In that case, he just needs to stop driving like a novice. He caught up to the other karts way too easily after spinning out multiple times, so he had to be on one of the easiest difficulty settings.

Looks cool, does look like a quick demo, there is no damage and when you are in the helmet cam it feels like the turning is weird, like if the pivot point is right in the middle of the car...

      But I still can't wait!!!

Not to try and sound like an expert, but Ive done a little karting... Not like the kiddie go karts but the european style karts that racers use to train on. Its awesome and really difficult and this seems to be pretty accurate. "floaty, like on ice , and pivot point right in the middle" is kinda how it really is in real life.

Now i see why the game is taking so long..

Its going to be loaded with features... Cant Wait.
... cool idea but I hope there will be more challenging track layouts than this one in some medieval town square.

Yamauchi is a Genius. (like Miyamoto and Kojima)

He should be heading Honda or Toyota anyday..... That guy knows car physics like there is no tomorrow.

      And I'm a Hyundai/Kia guy admittedly

You can turn off damage in Forza and then have the same problem. Or, you can just cut corners, or have other drivers drive the wrong way around the track. All of these things break the realism.

Again, if you want a game to feel real, one key part is you have to do your part and drive realistically. If you don't go spearing cars on purpose, the game will feel real, even in GT. If you do go spearing cars on purpose, it won't feel real, even with damage simulation.
spin cycle GT is the only game series this seems to really work in, in the Forza games it just messes up your car and you and they car you hit go flying off the course, heck even in need for speed shift ramming a car that way is catastrophic and pretty much means you just lost the race. I'm sure it won't be a problem in 5 since they are spending longer developing the game then NASA did with the Apollo program. lol

This is freakin' AWESOME!!! My most anticipated game ever.
I certainly hope it's as great as we all hope, but I have a feeling GT5 might ship with a bunch of rough edges that they'll spend a year updating via the internet.

Myself, about 5 years ago I was going to buy a PS3 for this game when it came out. Now I'm way past being interested in a video game system. I can take my fun little car down a back country road and have a lot more fun than if I were staring at a TV screen driving a virtual 458 or 918.

        One game to rule them.........
Seriously... I'm a die hard Forza guy, but it's hard not to get caught up in all this hype.

@John: SONY to make this game available for the XBox? Don't get your hopes up.
Considering Polyphony Digital (the maker of all Gran Turismo games) is owned and run by SONY, I don't think Gran Turismo will be on Xbox 360 any time soon. Start saving those pennies!
Please come out on XBox360 too!! I don't want to have to buy a PS3!
I'm cheap and have an xbox, I guess I have to wait for forza 4
        • 5 Years Ago
@John: I don't think GT5 has a snowball's chance in hell in getting on the Xbox 360, not when this very game is the sole reason why I and so many others are finally getting a PS3.
This is what happens when you let Michael J. Fox play Gran Turismo.
now all they need is add a whole city ala Grand theft out and call it a day.
