"Monster" Tajima's Pikes Peak assault – Click above to watch video after the jump

This is the kind of video that should be in the core curriculum for auto enthusiasts: A 2,618-pound Suzuki SX4 with a 3.1-liter twin-turbo V6 blown out to 897 horsepower and 654 pound-feet of torque. The pilot: Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima. No theatrics, no gimmicks, just 11 straight minutes of speed, dirt, opposite lock and ghastly mechanical fury. Follow the jump to watch the vid.

      What can I say that hasn't been said except use this car in gran turismo if you want to cheat.

      As another couple interesting notes, it's interesting how much traction trouble he has just past Halfway (the location, which isn't far in, not actually halfway) and how much trouble he has getting off the gas enough for the traction he has.

      Also, that engine which seemed like way too much power at the bottom is clearly working very hard by the time he gets to the top. He was using throttle inputs (or at least roar inputs) that would have spun the tires at the bottom but they're not even breaking the rear loose much at the very top.

      Just a reminder... Don't sit right on the apex, even if you're on the grass. Could hurt.

        Just realized my last post got sent to the wrong place.
        Damn you autoblog comment system! [/rant]

        I imagine by then, the engine is getting pretty warm, and the air is getting pretty thin.

      Holy moly.. that was a beautiful drive :D ..

      And to think the driver is 60 ?? thats just even more impressive ...

      man he cuts it close to those hay bales! On a side note, can we get stop using digital cameras that result in wavy video for this kinda stuff?
        • 4 Years Ago
        They're rolling shutter artifacts, also called jellyvision. Agreed, we need rid of this stuff, it's really annoying.
        • 4 Years Ago
        It's called "rolling shutter" and it's how CMOS cameras work. It's also why the Go Pro Hero cameras are $200 instead of $800. CMOS cameras have brought high quality video way down in cost. They will get better as time goes on and Mr. Moore works his magic.

      Wow, that was freakin' AWESOME! I don't what's more impressive the monster Suzuki or the Tajima's balls of steel.

      WOW! Those guys are insane! Such guts!

      At 6:45 nearly pooped my pants just watching him do it.

        I love F1 and understand this is apples to oranges, but this is the first car racing video (since C'etait un rendez-vous) that seriously raised my heart beat.

        This guy is a genious. The sheer number of variables with the gravel, wind, different textures and wear on the tyres-suspensions make his driving pure insanity and talent. Even if the whole road was paved and smooth as glass it would be darned impressive.

        WOW.

        I kind of regret that they are paving Pikes Peak completely. One of the charms is the transitions between the mud trails and the pavement. I think it does wonders for suspension technology (which has to be hardy and compliant) as well as tyre tech, not to mention engine endurance. It will be a shame to see this unique track being changed.

        Btw, link to rendezvous for those who havent seen it. It's easily downloadable on a ton of sites!

        @Valentino Amoro:

        Thanks for the link - that was amazing.

        @blueskyv201:

        Bring new meaning to "driving on the edge". I can't help but notice that the driver loves to hug the corners on every turn.

      if you like that, better watch the classic climb dance(though it's cut to 5 mins, vatanen did it in under 11 mins, in the 80's)

      HOLY CRAP! that was amazzzzzzzing. Dang I wouldn't have the guts to do that. After driving pikes peak myself i would get distrated easly from the view.
      Also they should put all of pikes peak, up and down the mountain in grand turismo 5 imagine all the bragging rights that would make all over the world with all the cars available to do it. There should be real race tracks and roads in the game.
