Ferrari 458 Italia Challenge – Click above for image gallery

The crew at the Axis of Oversteer have managed to snag what could be the first images of the upcoming Ferrari 458 Italia Challenge, and while no one's claiming that this is the real McCoy just yet, it's certainly packing the right kit.

The standard coupe's five-lug wheels have been nixed in favor of a single lug units, with each nine-spoke, lightweight hoop framing massive carbon ceramic stoppers. The Challenge appears slightly lower than stock and includes some revised aero bits in the form of longer, wider side skirts, a revised fascia and a bonnet sporting a set of hood pins.

Out back and inside, things appear to be slightly rough around the edges, so it's safe to assume this is just a prototype for the time being. However, the roll cage, plastic windows and deeply bolstered race seat are all sure to make the cut when the Challenge debuts later this year.

One thing we do know: The launch of the 599 GTO is going on this week in Italy, so it's likely that journalists are getting a sneak peak at the Challenge between making runs in Ferrari's Enzo-beating GT. That being the case, expect all the details to be revealed shortly.

Chill out guys! It has tape on the front end, ie, it's clearly a work in progress! When you go out to eat at a fancy restaurant do you start shouting at the chef before your food is on the plate?? Let them finish it before you criticize it, geez!!!

....but yeah, if it shows up in Paris without a single change, let the complaining begin.

hood pins on such a carefully shaped front end? I don't think so.
ugly, cut out plastic windows? I don't think so.

this is probably a very rough idea of a FIA GT competitor, certainly not something for the road.

Exactly. The 430GT is going to be replaced before they come out with a scud, and I can't imagine anyone in Ferrari entertaining the idea of hood pins. (wtf?) Also, if this were a test mule for a production car- why the race vent in the driver's window?

I can't put my finger on it, but something just looks "off" in my opinion. Perhaps seeing this thing with better pics and in full race livery will change my mind. Not that it matters much since I'm sure this thing will absolutely fly on the track.

I agree, something is NOT right with this picture...
Um Paul, and where do you think the Challenge versions come from? They start off as Stradale/Scuderia versions of the base cars. This will be the Challenge version of the "whatever they decide to call it" version of the 458...

perhaps it looks too pretty to be a functional race car?

maybe it just needs some decals/sponsorship to make it 'race' like...

racing stripes, to make it faster!

For all those who say that the McLaren MP4-12C is not attractive...

How is it less attractive than this Ferrari?

Are you kidding me? I have not been impressed with the aesthetics of the 458 as it is... and this looks like the development of a ricey body kit and wheels.

This has none of the drop-dead-sexy of the 288GTO, F40, 355 Challenge, 360 Challenge Stradale, F430 Scuderia, or other past hot ferraris.

This looks entirely too soft, and too disjointed for a Ferrari design. Did Pininfarina turn into the Toyota Design Studio to do this car, or something?

As the song says: The thrill is gone. (aesthetically speaking... regardless of whether it is the best mechanical Ferrari ever...)

No, I'm with you. I agree with Bimmer. There's something about this car that's just unsettling.

I LOVE the look of ALL the F430's. The Scuderia. The Challenge. This one is just not on par with those looks.

Yes. It's fast. Yes. Its form follows its function. But there's something UGLY about its looks. I like the looks of the MP4-12C better than this.

I'm a Ferrari fan, not a McLaren fan, when it comes to F1. I hope people don't think I'm just playing favorites.

I think the black bodywork on the car pictured, makes it look even worse than a regular 458. It's funny that you mentioned Toyota Design.... does anyone else see some Toyota 4500GT concept in this car (http://www.2000gt.net/4500GT/4500GT.php)? Look at the 2003 rendering.

I like the shape of this car actually.
Not sure about those headlights, I still don't get them.
It's either they are ahead of time or just plain ugly..........time will tell.

Looks like the 458 Italia will be in Transformers 3! Cool...

Whats so YAY about center lock wheels ?
Obviously nothing since the LF-A doesn't have them. :p
      • 4 Years Ago
This car in general is just UGLY!
It's definitely still a work in progress but I'm not positive its a factory job, the color and wheels are terrible.
