These kind of conversations go on all the time. An automaker will consider variations on the theme of a particular model, and the rabid media will occasionally pick up a snippet of that chatter and blow it way out of proportion. We can't say whether rumors of a two-door M coupe are reality or just spitballing, though many would argue that such a model is a necessity for success.
A two-door M could be offered in both V6 M37 form, and with a V8 as the M56. InsideLine has a rendering that shows a pretty spiffy premium coupe with a unique roof pillar treatment. It's a nice rendering, but we can posit that the production version won't be wearing a piece of C-pillar finery to make a '61 Valiant jealous.

LOVE IT! Love the kinky C-Pillar too.

Aren't buyers in this echelon of the market at least subconciously trying to appear 'of means' and 'classy'? That C-pillar just screams trendy, classless and cheap. Design gimmicks didn't get BMW, Lexus, Audi, MB anywhere. Not sure why Infiniti seems to thing fishy grilles and cheesy window details make things seem desirable.

Dangerously close to looking like the Hyundai Tiburon.

You would think Infiniti would be more concerned of taking 2000-2006 Mercedes S-Class Architecture and making their own Infiniti Q45/Q50/Q56 variants for sale to challenge Lexus and truly be taken seriously as a Luxury Car Maker... It obviously has the AWD architecture to add in as well as the engines and 7 speed trans to take on the segment without chomping at Mercedes' Heels too much.

There was an article awhile back on why Nissan decided to but the Q on hold. The segment wasn't hot and the sales was declining. I could be wrong though...memory is tricky.

i totally agree! it would most likely be a Q56, with rear and all-wheel drive available, a new Q would be great! there is not a real demand for coupes so another Q is a better choice. not to mention is is way past due! i really love the last Q45, although it really had a touchy gas pedal! we need another big luxury car!

      kill it in a fire!

that has got to be one of the ugliest c-pillar treatments i have seen. at least on the concept the lines flow a little better.

I tested the M37 and LOVED IT.

You'd get alot more out of an M37 for the same money you'd spend on a 5 series. A coupe wouldn't be a bad move but, I'm worried that sales wouldn't be strong unless they go very radical with the design. M sales already lag behind the BMW almost 1:3. With the Mercedes E Coupe out, you can expect to see at least 1:2 .

@John H. - yup, I have a hard time following the logic that something like this would provide conquest sales from BMW and Merc products.

        What's with the Mazda butt?
        I can't see it.

At best, this simply steals sales from the G35 coupe, which is awesome.

      Build it Infiniti!
      No.

      Just no.

I hated that on the Essence concept. It is still not good here.

Put the FX50's 5.0 V8 into the G37S 6MT... Re-name it G50S. OR adapt the guts of the GT-R's DCT as a mid-mounted throughput transmission, instead of a transaxle.

SELL IT as a limited edition, targeting the S5, and M3, with more refinement and tech than a fully loaded Mustang, which itself nudges ~$40K.
