2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI – Click above for high-res image

The day after mashing around an ice course in Park City, Utah, we sat down with one of Subaru's product planners to discuss what the automaker has in store in the near-term. Our questions ranged from Subaru's thoughts about adopting torque-vectoring all-wheel drive ("We're looking into it.") to what, if any progress was being made on the Toyobaru front ("No comment").

But when asked about a four-door version of the STI, our question was met with a slightly cocked head, a small smirk and a faint glimmer in the exec's eye. Could a sedan be in the cards?

Maybe. But judging by this solitary teaser of the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, it appears that the rally-bred hatch is getting an all-new wing inspired by Subaru's dearly-departed WRC contender. We'll know for sure on Thursday when the wraps officially come off at the New York Auto Show.

The lines are identical to the hatchback as others have pointed out, just with a really big wing. I'm confused about how you can get any more out of that picture.

No big rear wing please ... too much boy racer!

I don't care if it's a hatch, sedan, or coupe. Give me double-wish-bone up front or I'm not buying it. And I promise you, if this is a double wishbone front suspension design, I *WILL BUY IT*.

They need a hatch if they are ever going to be serious about competing in the WRC again. Sedans are not going to be competitive anytime soon. The STi is supposed to look like a rally car and rally cars have wings. IMO, the closer it looks to a rally car the better.

Doh, I forgot about the S2000 regulations starting in 2011 for the WRC class. I think they could compete in the P-WRC with the STi but they would need to develop a new car for S2000 regs.

I previewed this two years ago and nobody believed me...

Vince Burlapp put it on his page but even his fans didn`t believe it.

      Hmm...

The new wing seems a bit extreme to me, and I much prefer the looks of the current STi hatch, but I'll reserve final judgment until this Wednesday. It does look like the roof antennae has been removed somehow, so that's nice. Hopefully they include a twin-scroll turbo or some sort of engine upgrade to go along w/the wing insanity. =)

I think you're right, it looks like they may have replaced the previous antenna and replaced it with one of this shark fin antennas (i think thats were called), in the same location which explains the bump that appears in the same location as the current model. But there's another odd change in the cloth thats covering the car which occurs halfway between the bottom of the spoiler (wing...hopefully functional) and the roofline. Another user posted a rendering through another forum which has the glass end at that point which doesn't make sense from a driver's perspective and it also doesn't make sense for subaru to put a massive bend in the rear window (structurally horrible).

      I see what you mean.

      AHHH!!! THE WING IS BACK!!!
wait.... looking at the photo longer.. dont strap a gigantor wing on a hatch looks gawdy at best.....oh and stop with the kidracer aesthetics.

Mikhalian, I also thought looked like a notchback but then I pulled up a profile image of the impreza sedan and it has a pretty short trunk. Pretty sure it is just the sheet draping over the wing that is making it look that way.

Actually, the profile looks ALOT like the test mule Subaru had running around for their new coupe (Toyota joint venture). Maybe the unnamed coupe is now the STi?

Wake me up when they give it some more power.
