As we speak, the IZOD IndyCar series is looking over a number of proposals for the next generation of open-wheel racecars. One of those, the design from Dallara, has already been shown. Today at the Chicago Auto Show, DeltaWing pulled the covers off its design proposal, and the machine looks completely different from anything we've yet seen circling the Brickyard.

At first glance, a couple of interesting features jump out, not the least of which are the giant vertical rear wing and super-skinny front track. The cars also seem much longer than current Indycars, though we'd need to see the two machines next to one another to come to any real conclusions on the matter.

In any case, DeltaWing has a pretty radical design on its hands. Plus, Chip Ganassi Racing's Ben Bowlby, who formerly led design at Lola, is behind the effort.       "Open-wheel racing"

        Beat me to it. What part of that design depicts open-wheels?

        Open-wheel = no body work around the wheels and tires

      Maybe they are going for a land speed record.


      If it is intended to turn, it is backwards at best.

      Either it should be rectangular like most cars, or narrow in the back, and wider, and with greater stability in front.

      The SR71 worked this way, wide set engines, and a narrow fuselage, but thrust is different than traction. Totally different.

      narrow in the front is very unstable,like a tricycle . If they were to make the rearnarrow it would be a lot more stable.

      How is this thing an "open wheel" race car? It has wheels and tires inside housings, regardless of their aerodynamic purpose, they're not open wheels.

        HAH. These guys obviously had no concern about the suspension design! Lateral load transfer distribution anyone???

        We actually run a wider front track in the front on our race car for that exact reason.

        ...not to mention the driver can't see the widest part of the car... good luck hitting apexes.

        Comment after comment about how this thing can't handle. Facepalm. Are you guys automotive engineers? I think not. The guys who designed this thing are. Good ones at that. It is easy to see that this thing will handle well. To counter the narrow front track, the center of gravity is moved rearward, and the rear track is made wider.

        I'd be suprised if future concepts didn't have a wing in the front, but other than that, handling is theoretically uncompromised, possibly improved. Weight is claimed to be reduced, and there is huge aerodymanic advantage. Also, the wide rear platform would probably make a great platform for swappable battery packs for a possible electric indy.

        Also, comments about it being ugly. Again, facepalm. If you want to watch an ordinary looking car, watch NASCAR. Indy had its glory days when radical thinking was the norm. I say bring it.

      Looks like it would be best suited for tracks like Talledega or Daytona On a road course ? I'd have to see it to believe it. On the other hand, see what a race car designer can come up with after 7 martinis ?

        Well, it would, except it's spec'd to have an active torque differential -- like SH-AWD in the rear, which should get it around the corner... I don't think it looks good, but it's certainly different...

      nice car resurected from the past . I wonder if they have found a new variation of diapers for the driver to wear , like to see it at 150 on the corner "conservative" I ike to see the drivers face on crosswind condition ,I love to see how they will adress the down force which is allready a problem . that thing is made to go straight , nice to see Company that will give good leaving to "designer" in these days . there is nothing revolutionary about it but the pair of fin instead of one.

      Do you guys really think they haven't done their homework on this design? You all think you know better off hand. Maybe your are right. I would hate to see you all make fools of yourselves (only kidding, we all do it everyday on this blog, except for Paul Westerberg.)
