How works the differential -- click image above to watch the video

During the first couple of minutes of this clip, you might be asking yourself why a bunch of Tom of Finland types are riding around the desert on motorbikes. Like many of life's great mysteries, all is eventually revealed, if not explained. Speaking of mysteries, differentials are pretty nifty. We still remember getting a fancy-pants Technical Lego set one birthday and spending one week straight just watching the little plastic differential at work. So cool! And speaking of cool, you simply must watch this Chevy PSA about differentials. It's just fantastic. Note to world: many more of us would have gone much further in life if this was the sort of thing we got to watch in school. Full 9+ minute clip after the jump. Thanks to Alex for the tip!

Great video. If only kids could have the chance and interest to watch things like this and learn something.

Classic, even going so far as putting a woman on the inside wheel and a guy on the outside wheel during the last minute of the flick. Good 'ol innocent, subtle sexism!

The strange part is, she came out of the drivers side in what looked like a coupe... She was driving?? Also, what is she doing out of the kitchen and not making me a sammich?

I wasn't aware that differentials were great automotive mysteries. If anyone thinks they're a car enthusiast and don't understand something as basic as a differential then it might be time to pick up a new interest.

@ EXP Jawa. I actually design diff's also, I use this video to explain to every one the "voo-doo" that is a differential. This video also does a great job of explaining the inherent flaw of an open diff, namely its inability to torque bias and thus send all power to the well that spinning and not get the torque to the wheel with traction like a Torsen style diff.

        xmdfmk7x...
There are a lot of engineers that can't fully grasp the concept of differentials either. For example the ones who designed the rear in my Nissan Titan. Binding, leaking seals, and blown differentials seem to be a common experience for Titan owners!

Very informative, and I always thought that the 'Differential' is what made all cars different!
