The 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards are still months away, but the "long list" has leaked out and it's an odd mix of good, mediocre and, in several cases, not-yet-released.
Fifty journalists from around the continent have voted for 37 vehicles, with 12 offerings hailing from Japan, 11 from Europe, another 11 from the U.S. and three from Korea. Strangely, the Suzuki Kizashi, which hasn't even debuted in production guise, is included in the cars list, while the upcoming Honda Crosstour, the pseudo-wagon-cum-crossover, is listed (as a "truck" no less) despite only being recently confirmed by Honda and spied in the Great Smoky Mountains. Also of note, there's not single Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep offering to be found on the long list, which will be whittled down between now and the awards ceremony at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
Check out all the contenders for this year's award in both the car and truck categories, and let us know if they missed anything in the comments below.

The Acura ZDX and Honda Crosstour show that Honda design is still batting 1000 -- in recent years every single new Honda has been a styling miss. Gawd they are ugly.

agreed. but i'm pretty sure that this list is simply every single new car/truck for 2010, so they had to be included.
seriously, how many new vehicles can you name that aren't on these lists?

I'd have to pick the 2010 Chevy Equinox for TOTY given it's huge departure from the previous gen - and anybody who wouldn't at least *consider* the Fusion or Taurus as COTY is nuts - both are hugely different/better than their previous counter-parts, and seem to almost have been made to win awards like this one.

This has to be one of the most challenging lists yet. *most* of these cars deserve the award.

I'm thinking either the Ford Taurus or the Genesis

fusion/fusion hybrid seems like a logical choice. it appeals to the 'green' movement as well... best all around car and best hybrid as well.

If Taurus were to win (and I believe it is the best contending Ford and one of the top contenders overall), it would be big for the image. Genesis has gotten so much praise beyond expectation after it received NA Car of the Year. I highly doubt that Mustang would take anything. :/ Fusion would also be great with its impressive hybrid system. Although I am always confused with the North American choices. I hardly ever agree with them...

there seem to be no trucks on the truck list :S

Therein lies the future of "trucks"

I thought I had hit the link for the cars list by accident. That is a pretty pathetic "trucks" list.
I would like to vote for an embargo on any further pictures of new Acuras until they stop beating them with the ugly stick. That shield grill isn't getting any better with age. I am afraid if it keeps up I will lose my vision all together.
Farmboy 5:02PM (6/24/2009)
The "truck" list is awfully pathetic....most of these are crossovers. :/ I would be happy, and this would be kinda funny, if the Transit Connect won. :)

Taurus, Fusion, or Prius... It's a great list. I hate the Prius and all it stands for, but this is a significant redesign. The Fusion is the most efficient in its class while offering tons of value. And the Taurus will be the new flagship for an automaker desperate to prove what it can do.
This is a great list! Too bad there can be only one true winner.

"It's a great list. I hate the Prius and all it stands for"--------I hope you love SUVs and all they stand for, too fat to fit into a normal car, polluting earth, air and water, and starting wars. And of course going to Costco, because Prius is too small to contain a 12 jumbo muffins.
LoneWolf 1:56PM (6/24/2009)
@Aea Urchin: You don't have to love SUVs just because you dislike the Prius ;) Maybe he's driving a Ferrari?

Sea Urchin:
Just because someone doesn’t agree with your perception of the Prius doesn’t mean that you have to use vile, pathetic, stereotypical comments. If that’s how things are done then most would see your comments and inherently place you into the group of liberal, yuppie bandwagon jumpers that drive a Prius as a statement of pretentious showing off. The only thing that making negative crap comments like that does is show your narrow-mindedness and inability to see that there are far better methods of dealing with global pollution then hybrids. The Hybrid is a band-aid on the gaping wound that is our environment. The real fix should be coming in the form of alternative methods of generating global power and hydrogen propulsion.
So have fun driving home in your Prius and stopping at whole foods for your wheat cookies and soy milk. See look, I can make stupid thoughtless comments too…. Its not hard and doesn’t take too much thought !

“ I hate the Prius and all it stands for”
I do not have any problems with “I hate the Prius” I myself hate certain cars, I personally hate Prius’ interior, arguably the worst interior on the market, that is not an issue at all.
I have an issue with the “all it stands for” part. My good friend Joe dislikes the environmental responsibility part. That is what angers me that that is why I used those vile stereotypes.

Actually I drive a small hatchback. I hate the Prius because people who want good gas mileage buy it and act like they are green not realizing they pissed money away on the purchase price that will never wind up saving them anything. Not even the Earth considering the battery pack, shipping, etc. The Prius is a lie dressed in Hemp clothing.
If I went out and bought a small economical car, domestic, so a Focus, or Cobalt, and drove it 25,000 miles a year combined cycle with them getting 27 mpg and the prius getting 50 mpg. And gas was $2.45 (as I filled up for in NJ last night) The cobalt/Focus at 27 mpg costs $2268 a year for fuel and the Prius costs $1250. So $1000 a year for heavy driving. The fact that one has a waiting list, costs in the mid twenties, but is the same passenger cabin size as the other cars that I can get for employee pricing in the low teens, tomorrow. The car payments would be $500 for the Prius and $300 for the Focus/Cobalt. So the $1400 a year I save after fuel for the Focus/Cobalt will pay for my insurance.
To boot, if I bought a Prius I would have to drive under the speed limit, but oblivious to the cars around me, and have to act better than everyone. I'm just not that into it.
Sea Urchin, if you dare to claim that the Prius interior is superior to either the Cobalt LT of Focus SE, I will laugh at your ignorance, the 'weight-saving' interior of a Prius looks, feels and wears worse than any economy car I have ever owned.

Urchin: Everyone knows you don't like suv's. Give it a rest. Your rants are so old here.

if the prius wins i might boil my head

Some of us just like a bigger vehicle or need a truck. Personally I have over $7000 grand worth of tools (I'm a newer Auto Tech). This is no way in hell a Prius can haul my tools and tool box. Also I just don't enjoy driving an ecobox, I like a muscle car. It's just my preference. I never bought into Hybrids cause they are not a fix, they just a distraction us from finding the fuel to replace gas. I have driven a Prius and loathed it so much, cheap interior for a 30,000+ car is unacceptable. When I needed some power and grunt I had NONE. When I buy a car I want something I like and have fun driving. I'm not going to drive something I hate just cause it's "Eco Friendly" and will make me look better to a certain group of people.
