Top Gear has become a world-wide phenomenon over the years, and the U.S. isn't the only country that has a local spin-off on the way. Australia boasts one million Top Gear viewers, and show producers are hoping their locally produced version of the iconic BBC show translates into just as many fans.
Top Gear Australia is gearing up for its inaugural show next Monday, and judging from the promo clip after the jump, it looks like the blokes down under have some interesting ideas to keep us entertained. How about driving an aqua car into shark-invested waters? Sounds like fun. Australia picked three car-loving guys from Down Under to host the show, and from the clips we've seen so far, it looks like they have some chemistry. We're looking forward to seeing the finished product, but for a taste of what is to come, hit the jump. Thanks for the tip, Andrew!

I don't have sound at school, but this looks like it could be fun to watch. But I won't be as I am not in australia. So I am looking forward to the US version.

looks like the Stig makes a visit. unless they have their own...
catgirlshyla @ Sep 23rd 2008 2:50PM
Some say his home is under Ayers Rock, and that he once challenged Mad Max to a race. All we know is, He's called The Stig!!

These guys look too competant in their cutting and welding! lol
thiel @ Sep 24th 2008 5:53AM
Compared to the Brits yes, but all us Aussie men are required to shoot, weld and build houses from birth.

reminds me of the older seasons of UK top gear (season 2 & 3)...seems to be fun
DriverG @ Sep 23rd 2008 2:59PM
Ford GT? Best they could do for the promo?
Richard @ Sep 23rd 2008 7:16PM
sorry you deny its a great car...
DriverG @ Sep 23rd 2008 9:35PM
Great car, 5 years ago, or even two when it was still in production, but not what I'd expect to see on the promo for what's supposed to be the newest most awesome show of the year.
hidden_hunter @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:27PM
The point is that it's the one and only right hand drive model.
DriverG @ Sep 24th 2008 8:51AM
I got that, but even it's been around a while too. I'm not arguing with the car, one of the most fun I've ever driven, it's just not 'holy crap that looks awesome' awesome.

Has AB become an official marketing arm of the Top Gear franchise? Most stories are not even about the actual show anymore but these knockoffs from other countries. I don't think a day goes by when there isn't some story about Top Gear.
The producers of Top Gear owes AB some advertising money!

I'm just glad that with the USA & Australia versions now we'll have Top Gear x3.

As much as I dig the people of OZ, there really is something special about the UK flavor of Top Gear that makes it extremely special.
I'm from North America - California - Los Angeles and will not watch nor am I even remotely interested IN Top Gear with a U.S. cast.
Its sort of "weird"...that each country has their version of TG. Why cant we enjoy the British cast? Whats wrong with having THEM?
I enjoy the chemistry between Jeremy, James, Richard and The Stig!
I think this non-British editions are because of the gutsy honest joking some cast members do.
But again, all respects and luck to the OZ guys which Im sure will also do a great job as Australians are just as gutsy!

awesome, looks like an ideal balance of top gear format, but their own show, can't wait till monday..
Khanh @ Sep 23rd 2008 8:36PM
"How about driving an aqua car into shark-invested waters?"
lol, "shark-invested". Should be 'shark infested' I think? unless that was intentional...
bajabusta @ Sep 23rd 2008 9:57PM
Wow, maybe they will be able to get the cars around the track w/ no rain!!
Holden @ Sep 23rd 2008 11:25PM
Mate, its the best car show in the world, car lovers around the world are kind of interested in hearing about it. Top Gear is on the international TV station in AUS, which has very little advertising, I probably wouldn't have even known about the Aus version but for Auto Blog.

"this is better than sex"
he ain't do'en it right then!
but in all seriousness, they might just pull this off, once they stop sounding like they are bad neoghbours actors with the obviously pre-rehursed/scripted 'discussion' sections
