The Five Most Efficient Electric Hatchbacks Sold In America

There are many reasons people choose to buy hatchbacks, but perhaps the number one reason to park a hatch in your driveway is efficiency. It's simply a more efficient use of space to extend the roof of the car over the rear cargo area, which is why even small hatchbacks oftentimes offer just as much usable space as larger sedans.

While the efficient use of space may not surprise you, one area where little hatchbacks can also save their owners money is when it comes time to fill up. We took a look at the most efficient hatchbacks for sale in America and found that each and every one of the top five were electric. While EVs may not be for everybody, if you have the circumstances, these five electric hatchbacks offer plenty of potential savings.

Scroll through out list of the five most efficient hatchbacks sold in America.

Despite being the first electric vehicle offered for sale by the Korean automaker, the Kia Soul EV earns a spot on our list of the most efficient hatchbacks for sale in the United States.

Sadly, Kia has only made the Soul EV available in California, making it an option only for those living on the Far West Coast. Pity, because we found that there's a lot to like in the Kia Soul EV, including its EPA equivalent fuel mileage ratings of 120 miles per gallon in the city and 92 on the highway.

Clearly, buyers see plenty to like in the Nissan Leaf, and we agree. Not only is the Leaf completely free of emissions and completely free of gasoline, it's also incredibly efficient, with EPA fuel mileage equivalency ratings of 126 mpg in the City and 101 on the Highway.

    3. Volkswagen e-Golf

    Sticker Price: $35,445
    Invoice Price: $34,027
Fuel Economy: 126 City, 105 Highway (EPA equivalent)

The Volkswagen e-Golf is a new player in the electric vehicle market in the United States for 2014 (the car is listed as a 2015 model).

Because it's based on the latest version of VW's much-loved Golf model, the e-Golf feels like a premium vehicle, with good interior bits and pieces to go along with its clear European sense of style. It's priced to go head-to-head with the Nissan Leaf, but it's only currently available in a few States. If you're interested, we'd suggest contacting your local dealership, because, with its EPA fuel mileage equivalency ratings of 126 mpg in the City and 105 on the Highway, this is the most efficient compact car sold in America.

    2. Fiat 500e

    Sticker Price: $31,800
    Invoice Price: $31,276
Fuel Economy: 122 City, 108 Highway (EPA equivalent)

Like the Kia Soul EV and Nissan Leaf already seen in this list, the Fiat 500e is fully electric, meaning it doesn't use a drop of gasoline or emit anything from a tailpipe. It doesn't even have a tailpipe! What makes the Fiat 500e different from other electric cars is its very Italian sense of style.

The Fiat 500e is more fun to drive than many other electric cars, with quick reflexes and a sporty overall demeanor. Unfortunately, like many other vehicles on our list, the little electric hatchback from Italy isn't available in every State, so check with your local dealer before falling in love. Those who do buy one, though, will be rewarded with EPA fuel mileage equivalency ratings of 122 in the City and 108 on the Highway.

    Invoice Price: $25,747 - $26,122
Fuel Economy: 128 City, 109 Highway (EPA equivalent)

The Chevy Spark EV is currently the only 100-percent electric vehicle sold by General Motors in the United States. Though the Chevy Volt and Cadillac ELR are also electrically powered, they offer gasoline engines that can recharge the battery pack while on the road.

Due to its small size, light weight and clever engineering, the Chevy Spark EV is the most efficient hatchback currently sold in the United States. It's also pretty fun to drive, so its EPA fuel mileage equivalency ratings of 128 mpg in the City and 109 on the Highway are icing on the cake.
