Wendell Oliver Scott may not be a household name, but he should be. The Virginia native is the first Black American full-time competitor in NASCAR history. During the Civil Rights Movement Wendell Scott loved nothing more than to grab the steering wheel and go as fast as he can on the race track. He used his WWII engineering background to improve his vehicles and he didn’t let the racism he was met with stop him from competing and changing history.
