We get a closer look at the anticipated Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

Transcript

SEBASTIAN BLANCO: Hello. Sebastian Blanco here for Autoblog, coming to you from the driver's seat of the all-new Mercedes EQS SUV. Now I'm in the driver's seat. We can't go anywhere. This vehicle is in a static situation. We're not able to drive it yet.

In fact, Mercedes is just introducing this vehicle. So you get to see it, I get to say a few things about it. There's a lot we don't know yet, things that will be coming. So what do we know? This is the EQS SUV, as I said. It is the first SUV on this particular platform, a follow-up to the EQS sedan.

And if you're sitting where I am, it looks very similar to the EQS sedan from the inside-- the Hyperscreen, the instrument panel, a lot of the buttons. Things seem similar, but that makes sense. This is the SUV version of the EQS sedan.

You can't open the hood in the EQS SUV, and there wouldn't be anything there if you needed to. The only thing that you really need to refill or worry about under the hood is the washer fluid, and that is accessible from a small port in front of the driver's side door.

The EQS SUV has a battery pack that's 107.8 kilowatt-hours, and that is the usable capacity. Mercedes isn't talking about the gross capacity. And in fact, there's a lot of details that they're not saying. So we don't know things like range, charging speeds, those kind of things quite yet. But those will be coming, as they say. Stay tuned.

We do know that the rear wheels of the EQS SUV do turn a little bit to give you a tighter turning radius. There's an off-road mode, which is new for the SUV version. So there's a few changes compared to the sedan that aren't just differences in body style.

What you see here is the EQS SUV with the AMG line exterior package. The exterior paint color is called Alpine Grey. And if you look at the rear tail lights, you see there's like a helix-style design in there. That's something that Mercedes introduced last year in both the EQS and the EQE. It's sort of a design language piece they have for their electric vehicles.

There's a lot of aerodynamic details that went into the design of the EQS SUV. Electric vehicles, Mercedes found, when they put the cover on the bottom to sort of make things more aerodynamic, you can do a lot with that that you can't do in a standard internal combustion engine. For example, the side running boards that are both on the EQS SUV and Mercedes said will be coming in a lot of future vehicles, those actually helped to make the car more aerodynamic.

And you might think the way they stick out from the car, they might actually increase drag. But instead, because they're helping to extend that underbody straight, flat, horizontal platform down there, they actually create less turbulence, which helps with the efficiency. Same thing with there are some little things on the rear end that sort of help pull that undercarriage further back, once again decreasing turbulence and making the car overall more efficient.

So those are some of the things we do know about the EQS SUV. This is a car that's got North America in mind. It's going to be built in Alabama, sold first in the US. So there's a lot of consideration given to the US market. Production starts this summer, goes on sale in the fall. And until then, enjoy the ride.
