Senior Editor James Riswick gives us a closer look at the Ford F-150 Lightning. The Lightning shares the regular F-150's Console Work Surface (and the chunky shifter that motors down to make way for it). Look ma! No engine! The Lightning can fit a lot of junk in its frunk. Starting up the Lightning is unlike anything you've experienced in a full-size truck before.
TranscriptJAMES RISWICK: Now normally when talking about a truck's cargo carrying capabilities, we'd be at the other end. But yeah, this is the Ford F-150 Lightning. Look, ma. No engine. Yeah, this is quite the frunk here on the Lightning. And this piece here comes out. It's a very hefty piece. And you can flip it over just like the tailgate. There is a measuring tape, as well some other elements down here.
You do have a cargo net. That's always a nice feature. You have some hooks. Very handy. And then a whole bunch of electrical outlets. You do have a light. And you still have the government-mandated escape button, which, frankly, I think a fairly sized person could be stuffed in here, not that I'm encouraging it. But-- then up here, to press that button closes it. There you go. F-150 Lightning frunk.
So I'm in the new Ford F-150 Lightning. And as you can see here, it does have the great big sink for a huge "Mona Lisa" sized portrait touch screen. But what I want to talk about is, well, the center console. So if you press this button here, that motors down like that. Oh, well, what good is that? Well, pop here, and bam. Flat workstation. It'd be great if you could put a laptop there. Or want to have some lunch? You could-- never mind a sandwich. You could just eat a whole giant steak multi-course meal right here.
So just unique feature of the Ford F-150, not just the Lightning, but available elsewhere in the range. And then if you want to put that back up, it's back up. And to start it up, well, you do the same as you normally would. The start button is down here. But what happens after, well, that's totally different. No engine roar, no exhaust bark. Just absolute silence. And of course, the little electric vehicle tone.
