We recap the week in automotive news, including a look at the 2017 Camaro ZL1, Toyota 86, and automatic emergency braking.

Transcript

- The biggest story by far this week was the reveal of the 2017 Chevy Carmaro ZL1. This is the most powerful camaro in history with 640 horsepower and 640 pound feet of torque. Now what you might not know is it has an optional 10 speed. Yes, you can get a six speed manual, but you'll have to check out the 10 speed, the 10 speed automatic gearbox.

This is the fruit of a project that GM has been working on for years with-- you're not going to believe this-- Ford Motor Company. The two companies teamed up and announced this deal in 2013. It'll be used for both rear wheel cars, like the camaro, and front wheel drive vehicles. This transmission is a big deal, and, you know what, the camaro ZL1 is a great way to launch it for Chevy and General Motors.

The Scion brand is closing. That means some Scions, like the FR-S sports car, will now become Toyotas. This week, Toyota confirmed plans to rename the FR-S the Toyota 86, and frankly, in our opinion, this is long overdue. Adding the FR-S to the Toyota brand gives the automaker a boost with enthusiasts, and this isn't simply a rebadging. Toyota is stiffening the suspension, giving it a larger front air intake, and it's giving it five more horsepower. We can't wait to get a closer look next week at the New York Auto Show.

NHTSA and nearly every automaker that sells cars in the United States announced plans on Thursday that they will commit to making automatic emergency braking standard in all cars by 2022. This is a huge step forward for the industry, and it will likely increase safety across the country. This technology is going to be your car much sooner than analysts or we in AutoBlog expected.

Those are the highlights from the week that was. We're off next week because we'll be obsessively covering the New York Auto Show. Be sure to come back to AutoBlog.com for all of it. I'm Greg Migliore. Thanks for watching.
