Overview
The iconic Volkswagen GTI was arguably the first "hot hatch" when VW made a small hatchback fun to drive, now currently in it's fourth generation, the GTI carries on the tradition. The GTI is available as a two-door hatchback only; it's powered by either a 180-hp turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, or a 200-hp 2.8-liter VR6. The 1.8T is standard with a five-speed manual transmission while a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic is optional. The only transmission choice for the VR6 is a six-speed manual. An extensive list of standard equipment includes features such as well-bolstered cloth sport seats, eight speaker sound system, alloy wheels, sport suspension, power windows, doors and locks, keyless entry, leather steering wheel and shift knob, air conditioning and cruise control. The VR6 model includes a few more standard features such as a multi-function trip computer, chrome exhaust tips and 17-inch alloy wheels; while also offering some options like electronic climate control, self-dimming rearview mirror, rain sensing wipers and ambient interior lighting that are unique to the VR6. Safety features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, front safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, anti-intrusion side door beams, and a steering wheel which is deformable/collapsible upon impact. Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) with brake assist is standard on the VR6 and optional on the 1.8T. For 2005, the GTI receives no changes over 2004.
