Byron tests the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R to see if it is louder than his 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT 392.

Hey there, everybody. Welcome back to my garage. If you've seen this segment before, you'll probably notice right away that something's missing. That's my Challenger. Sadly, I no longer have it. I sold it to Carvana. They gave me a great deal, and I plan to write about it.
In the meantime, we're going to continue with "Are you louder than a Dodge Challenger?" because recordings last forever, even if cars don't.
This week we have, oh, the best engine you can buy for less than $100,000, in my personal opinion. We have a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R. The R doesn't really matter for the sake of this comparison. Loud is loud. The engine is the same regardless of which GT350 you get.
But, oh, this thing is magnificent. And it might even have a shot of taking the Challenger's crown for the loudest cold startup. The only issue I see with this is the GT350, like all of the new fun Mustangs, has the Good Neighbor Mode for the exhaust, so it actually defaults to Normal and not Sport Mode at startup.
And, again, if you follow the series you know, no cheaters. We do not allow cheater modes for the exhaust systems. Can't just flick it into whatever mode and say, oh yeah, we're louder. Doesn't work that way. So the Normal mode is the only mode you get. No ringers.
So I'm gonna roll the GT350R into the garage. Gonna let it settle for a little bit. It's been out. I've been shooting it. It's a little warm. I want it to be cool. We'll fire it up and see what number we get.

All right, so get our numbers. As you saw from the frame, we hit 83.5 decibels with the GT350R. That's good enough for second place. The 2013 Dodge Challenger, after which this test has been named, is still our reigning champion at 83.7 decibels.
Again, this is a highly unscientific test, but I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe manufacturers are building modern sporty cars to be just as loud as they possibly can.
And I'm guessing that number is going to correspond with whatever registers as 83.5 decibels in my really cheap-- actually, free-- Android app that we're using for these. So my dearly departed Challenger is still our reigning champion.
So that's where we sit for now. We're up to about seven or eight cars in this challenge so far. Just because the Challenger is no longer with us does not mean I won't continue to do these. So you're stuck with them as long as you listen.
