Gear.Club Unlimited brings sim racing to the Nintendo Switch

While PC, Playstation, and Xbox owners have a plethora of excellent racing simulators to choose from, owners of Nintendo consoles haven't been so lucky. For the most part, anything beyond Mario Kart has simply been a half-done port of a game that works much better on another console. Things might be changing with the Nintendo Switch, as Eden Games is bringing Gear.Club Unlimted to the new console later this year.

This appears to be an expansion of the popular Gear.Club mobile game for iOS and Android. That may not sound like a great pedigree, but Eden Games has been making racing games for nearly two decades with titles like Test Drive, Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed, and the V-Rally series. Gear.Club Unlimited packs a number of real-world cars from McLaren, Pagani, and Ruf (sorry Porschephiles). The tracks may be fake, but Eden Games has made an effort to simulate real world engines, suspension, and aero.

We don't have a firm release date beyond the fourth quarter of 2017, but it's exciting to see third party developers return to Nintendo after years of neglect. It's going to be interesting to see where Eden Games prices Gear.Club Unlimited. It's a freemium mobile game, relying on ads and in-app purchases to make money. That sort of business model doesn't fly on consoles, so expect to pay more initially for a fully fleshed-out experience. It may not be Gran Turismo or Forza, but it's a start.
