Hamilton takes sixth Canadian Grand Prix

Following the previous day when he broke the qualifying track record, as well as tying the second-best pole record in history, Lewis Hamilton continued his success Sunday afternoon at the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve by taking his third victory of the season, and his 56th career triumph. Hamilton led from start to finish to finish just under 20 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas. Daniel Ricciardo fought off three other challengers to take third.

Canada has been one track where Hamilton has had much success, and this weekend was no exception.
"I had my first pole here," recalled Hamilton afterwards, "And my first win ten years ago, and I repeated it here this weekend. It is very special and I would like to thank my team to made it all possible and the factory which worked real hard what we had to fix in the race to bring it here."

With both Mercedes entries placing in the top two, it puts the silver arrows in an eight-point lead in the constructor's championship ahead of their arch rivals, Ferrari. However, in the drivers' championship, Sebastian Vettel still holds a 12-point lead ahead of Hamilton going into the next race in two weeks in Azerbaijan.

It did not take long for the first and only safety car to appear on the circuit, just one lap into the race, when Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean struck Carlos Sainz Jr, spinning the Spaniard around, only for him to collect an innocent Felipe Massa just up the road, putting both drivers out of the race. Right after the restart, Max Verstappen, who at the time, was running in an impressive second place, retired from the race with a battery issue on lap 11. Verstappen's position on the narrow track brought out the only virtual safety car, which lasted only for four laps.

Besides Sainz Jr. and Massa, the race had a very low attrition rate, with only Dani Kvyat and Fernando Alonso along with Verstappen, being the other retirees, with Kvyat encountering a power unit failure and Alonso experiencing an engine failure. Vettel fought back hard from a broken front wing early in the race, caused by a first lap touch with Bottas, to move up the grid, just missing the chance to catch and pass Ricciardo, to take fourth. Both Force India's of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while Kimi Raikkonen was disappointing in his Ferrari, taking seventh. Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth in his Renault, and Lance Stroll grabbed his first points of the season in front of his home fans in ninth. Grosjean, despite his setback early on, recovered to finish in tenth.

Hamilton reminiscing afterwards, realized that without his team, what he accomplished would never have been done.

"I am so honored to be here this weekend," He continued. To be up and match Aryton (Senna) in qualifying. I work with a great group of people, just a small part of a big chain."
