All new in 2016 (and in no need of an update), the SMART FORTWO receives a convertible - pictured - for this model year. And both coupe and cabriolet receive the option of electrification, although the EV variants will launch at some point in the spring or summer of '17. Very small and eminently maneuverable, these are great options for urban commuting, less great for your daughter's swim team.
Going forward, it was announced that Smart will transition into an EV-only business model in the US and Canada with the introduction of the electric models later this year. With gasoline both plentiful and cheap, demand for gas-powered mini and microcars is dropping. It's unclear how many of Daimler's 85 Smart dealers in the U.S. will survive the transition.
