When it comes to your vehicle, one of the most important documents you have is the car title. This is proof that you own your vehicle and makes it possible for you to transfer ownership, and sell your vehicle. All too often this title seems to go missing though. Perhaps you’ve moved recently, maybe your car is many years old and you just can’t remember where you’ve placed it. Whatever the circumstances, the title can become lost. Not only lost, but in some instances it may even be stolen.
In the state of Rhode Island you are able to have a duplicate car title made if yours has been damaged, stolen, or lost. The duplicate is issued through the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. The state requires that any vehicle that is 2001 or newer have a car title. Here's a look at the steps you can take to have a duplicate issued. Keep in mind only the owner will have the title issued to them.
To have the duplicate title processed you will have to visit the Pawtucket DMV, as this is the only office it can be done at. The address for the Title Office at the Pawtucket DMV is:
Division of Motor Vehicles
600 New London Ave.
Cranston, RI 02920
You will need to fill out the Application for Title (Form TR-2/TR-9), as well as have it notarized.
Bring with you proper ID, proof of residence, and a lien release letter if one had been on the vehicle.
There is a cost of $51.50 for the duplicate car title.
You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Rhode Island by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
