Derringer electric bike pedaling uphill in Kickstarter campaign

Derringer, an upscale custom bicycle maker is trying to raise enough funds on Kickstarter to make the electric bicycle you see above. The problem is that the company needs about $8,300 a day for the next week or so to make the Kickstarter campaign a success.

Through Kickstarter, the Los Angeles-based maker of "board-track inspired" motorized bicycles, cruisers and other products is offering three models that range in battery size from 37 to 63 volts and range in top speed from 20 to 40 miles per hour. The cost ranges between $3,500 and $6,500. Definitely not cheap, but the bikes do have hydraulic disc breaks and a powder-coated paint job. Styling is inspired by the board-track racing bikes that was popular in Southern California a century ago. In fact, the bikes' batteries will be housed inside casing that references the old-school fuel tanks.

We first wrote about Derringer in 2008, and its a company that touts the cache of having a hand-made e-bike. The bicycles are welded in Portland, Oregon, and assembled in Los Angeles. So far, Derringer has raised $8,496 from 40 prospective investors. It's a long ways to go to hit the $75,000 goal by January 22, but Derringer's pitch might just sway you.
