Auto X Prize has 25 teams registered with one month left

With formal registration only open for another month, the Progressive Automotive X Prize currently has 25 registered teams; you can see them all here. There are 20 teams listed on that page, and the X Prize says that two of the teams are still confidential - not sure who the other three are. Some names that regular readers will recognize on the list are Aptera, Zap, MDI, and Tata Motors. There have been a lot of steps to this sign-up process, and the teams have at least one more to go: the X Prize says that, "final confirmation of each team's Registered Team status is pending their signature of a Master Team Agreement (MTA) upon its release this year." Whew.

In other AXP news, the team is going totally social media, with presences on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook Group, and YouTube. Don't say we never helped you make a friend or three.

PRESS RELEASE:

REGISTRATION CLOSES FEBRUARY 28, 2009 – 25 TEAMS ANNOUNCED

The formal registration period for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, which opened on August 1 2008, will close on February 28, 2009. Those interested in applying to become a Registered Team should visit the Registration Application page on our website to request the entry application.

On November 19, 2008, the prize made an announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show of our first wave of Registered Teams. The group now includes 25 teams (23 public and 2 confidential). An additional round of confirmed teams will be announced shortly. These ambitious teams from around the world will work to design and build production-capable, super-efficient, clean vehicles that people want to buy. Final confirmation of each team's Registered Team status is pending their signature of a Master Team Agreement (MTA) upon its release this year. Each team has a different strategy for winning the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE, and each idea has the potential to revolutionize the world. Their stories are inspiring, and we are pleased to provide you with the opportunity to get to know each of our Registered competitors. Follow their progress through their blogs, videos and press articles to see how they are making a difference in your world by visiting our Registered Teams page.

GUIDELINES RELEASED

The revised Competition Guidelines for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE competition were released last week-end, coinciding with our appearance at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit . You can download a copy by visiting the Guidelines page on our website.

This document weighs in at almost 70 pages, so there is a lot to consume. For those familiar with the previous Draft Guidelines, check out page 5 of the current version to find out what is new. In the area of "most requested," we have removed the top speed requirement, allowed tandem seating in the Alternative Class, reduced acceleration requirements, reduced back seat requirements in the Mainstream Class, and removed the requirement for an eco-feedback indicator. EDUCATION PROGRAM UPDATES

We received the great news on August 28, 2008, that the U.S. Department of Energy had officially approved a $3.5MM grant to support the development of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Education Program. As you may recall, the program will engage students and the public in learning about advanced vehicle technologies, energy efficiency, climate change, alternative fuels, and the science, technology, engineering, and math behind efficient vehicle development. A primary goal will be to inspire youth to learn more about and pursue careers in advanced vehicle development, and to generate excitement about the energy-efficient vehicle options of the near-future. The program will feature three key components, including an online knowledge center with real-time vehicle telemetry and an eco-feedback indicator, a national high school student contest, and race series host city events. Look for the initial online knowledge center to be launched in early February.
