Colorado Springs has nation's top biodiesel fleet

Government Fleet Magazine (you've got your subscription, right?) named Colorado Springs as the city with the top national biodiesel municipal fleet. Blue Sun biodiesel - the provider of the B20 biofuel blend to the city - put out a release explaining the win, noting that Austin, Texas and San Francisco were not the winners. How did GFM pick this fleet? No idea.
Colorado Springs has been using B20 in over 2,400 city vehicles and other equipment for the last 4-5 years. The city has used over 1.6 million gallons, which Blue Sun says has prevented five million pounds of CO2 from getting into the atmosphere.

Colorado Springs' Municipal Fleet Wins Top National Rank Using Blue Sun Biodiesel

GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Colorado Springs this week was ranked as the top municipal biodiesel fleet in the nation by Government Fleet Magazine. The city beat out San Francisco and Austin, Texas, for the award.

Colorado-based Blue Sun Biodiesel has been providing the city (and other cities across the Front Range such as Ft. Collins, Denver, Boulder) with Blue Sun Fusion B20 Biodiesel for the past 4 years -- an ultra-low sulfur fuel comprising 20% virgin oilseed-based biodiesel, from renewable US-grown crops, and 80% petroleum diesel and an advanced DTX performance additive.

"We're pleased Colorado Springs' efforts in promoting sustainability have been nationally recognized. Blue Sun is proud to be associated with their winning initiative. Fusion not only reduces our customers' environmental impact, it also provides proven performance and an economic edge for their fleets," said Jeff Probst, Blue Sun's President and CEO.

Since 2003, more than 2,400 city vehicles and equipment have run on Blue Sun's B20. To date, Colorado Springs has used nearly 1.6 million gallons of B20 biodiesel. That is the equivalent of more than 5 million pounds of carbon dioxide not making it into the atmosphere, or 491 passenger cars not driving for one year.

Blue Sun's Authorized Distributor in Colorado Springs, Acorn Petroleum, distributes Blue Sun B20 to the city as well as through its commercial fleet fueling facilities in Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Trinidad.

The use of Blue Sun B20 fuel, as compared to using regular petroleum diesel, reduces carbon monoxide by 24%, hydrocarbons by 29%, and nitrogen oxides by 4%, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. Particulate emissions also go down by 18% and carbon dioxide improves by 16%.
