China becoming global hub for auto electronics

Visteon Corporation announced Monday that it will base its global electronics product group in Shanghai, alongside the Visteon China Technical Center. Visteon makes audio, entertainment, driver-information, powertrain-control and lighting systems electronics in China.
In related news, GM announced it has relocated its worldwide eletronics purchasing unit from Michigan to Shanghai. Automotive News cites a source close to GM as saying, "Just about all electronic subcomponents now originate in China or Korea or Singapore." Electronics are forecast to make up 40 percent of a new vehicle's value by 2010.
