GM sells plant, leases part of it back

General Motors and Berkeley Business Park Associates II finalized the sale of the 226-acre General Motors Service and Parts Operation Processing Center last Wednesday. The 2.2 million square foot plant is located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. While GM asked that the sale price not be disclosed, it was said that General Motors plans to lease back up to 500,000 square feet to continue operations.

The rest of the plant will be sub-divided and leased to other tenants. The building was slated to phase out operations over several years starting 2004, with jobs being shifted to three plants in Michigan. GM owns one other plant in the Martinsburg area that was not affected by the cuts at the processing center.
