Mitsubishi Outlander bowing at Tokyo Motor Show

While not quite as exciting as the Concept-X, Mitsubishi's new Outlander will nonetheless debut this month in Tokyo, as well. Aside from the new look which showcases  a clean front end and familiar C-pillar kink (think Pontiac Vibe or Toyota's new RAV4), the big news for the Outlander is its new powertrain that combines Mitsubishi's 165-hp 2.4L MIVEC four-cylinder with a new Sport Mode 6-speed CVT.

We?ll ignore the fact that programming speeds into a CVT is a waste of processing power, though the 2.4L MIVEC is a jewel of a powerplant perhaps best expressed in the Lancer Ralliart sedan. The new Outlander will also feature Active Stability Control technology combined with an electronically controlled 4WD system that should keep this soft-roader on its intended path. Mitsubishi is claiming the new Outlander has ?hard-hitting on-road? performance, which we?ll reserve judgment on until the ute shows up here in the States. Though we love the 2.4L in the Ralliart, it will have a tough time keeping up with larger fours and even V6 engines in many of its competitors.
