Sonata prepares for showdown in Japan

You can just see the tumbleweed rolling across the asphalt main street of Tokyo as the new Hyundai Sonata rolls into town. The townsfolk duck for cover in cell phone stores and noodle shops, peering out from behind the counters to see the Sonata face off against Japan's local heroes, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, on their home turf. The Sonata goes on sale in Japan on Sept. 10, a market in which Hyundai has actually not been improving over the past few years. During the first seven months of 2005 the South Korean automaker only sold 1,384 units in Japan, though it hopes to sell up to 1,500 Sonatas a year.
