Hemis and Hybrids

We saw this article that Motor Trend pulled from Wards and could not resist. Current popular wisdom seems to implicate GM and Ford's lack of hybrids for their current hardships.  In fact, Thomas L. Friedman did a column in the NY Times on June 17th in essence stating 'that Detroit auto makers are idiots for not focusing all their attention on building fuel misers and pursuing hybrid technology as aggressively as Toyota.'
Wow! Compare that logic with the fact that the Hemi V8 has greatly influenced Chrysler's turn around and you will find a disconnect in the comment on hybrids. Not to mention that hybrids, while their demand is greater than supply in some cases, are not sold in high volume. Hybrids are not particularly profitable either. Any success that Honda and Toyota have is almost certainly independent from their marketing of hybrids.
