Long gone are the days when you simply took your foot off the brake, popped the clutch, mashed the pedal to the floor, and waited for that disco-ish "CHiPs" music to cue up as Ponch and Jon give chase. No, now you've got to figure out what "mode" you're going to be in before you become that law breaker. It's all just so complicated.
Tesla Motors has added a Firmware 7.0 update that includes something called "Launch Mode" for the Model S all-electric sedan, according to Teslarati and as seen in this video from Mike Burrows. The mode is only available for the P85D variant, and it's designed to optimize traction and power and basically prevent the driver from getting all squirrelly after siccing those four Tesla tires and all of the torque they transfer onto an unsuspecting road.
In the 48-second video showing how the feature works, it takes just a small fraction of those 48 seconds for the car to hit its desired speed. Check out the video above for a better sense of that mighty fun ride. From the looks of it, Burrows did his test on a rain-slicked road, too, and kept things straight, so it appears Launch Mode did its job properly.
This summer, the California-based automaker introduced the term "Ludicrous Mode" into the modern automotive lexicon. That feature enables a properly programmed Model S to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. The Model S previous had an "Insane Mode" which pushed the car from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds.
