Giant robot with car-destroying guns ready for 4th of July

The 4th of July is almost upon us. And you know what that means: BBQ, fireworks, casual daytime drinking, maybe a trip to the water park... Oh, and giant fighting robots.

Okay, so that might not be part of the usual recipe for a good Independence Day weekend celebration, but apparently nobody told that to the guys over at MegaBots, Inc. The all-American robotics team put out this video previewing its latest project, called the Mark II and billed as "America's first fully functional giant piloted robot." It's just like the mechanized warrior bots from so many of the movies, cartoon shows, and video games that entertained us throughout our formative years and filled our childhood dreams – only this one is actually real.

The MegaBots MkII is about ready to make its debut. It stands 15 feet tall, weighs some 12,000 pounds, is operated from a two-man cockpit, and packs paintball guns capable of shooting 3-pound color-filled cannonballs at speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour. As you can see from the video above, those paintball guns are particularly adept at shooting the heck out of old jalopies, but that's just the starting point. The team at MegaBots is preparing to pit their big bot against a rival from Japan one year from now. It promises to be a battle of big-screen proportions, and we can hardly wait.
