The NASCAR Sprint Cup went from a motorsport to a boxing matching following the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. The brawl was allegedly instigated when Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon made contact following a restart near the end of the race. The incident punctured one of Gordon's tires and left him fighting mad. Although, NASCAR's punishment might be as bizarre as the fisticuffs that prompted it.
After the race, Gordon stopped his car next Keselowski in the pit lane. Ostensibly, the two of them were going to have a rather heated conversation about what happened, but it rapidly became a melee, especially when driver Kevin Harvick allegedly pushed Keselowski closer to Gordon, according to Car and Driver.
Despite the altercation precipitating from an on-track incident, NASCAR ignored the drivers when it came time to announce punishments. Instead, the organization handed down $25,000-fines and six-race suspension for three crew members, a $10,000 fine and a three-race suspension for another. The crew chiefs for Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon received $50,000 fines and six-race probations, according to Car and Driver.
The decision to not to penalize the drivers seems more than a little confusing, especially since they clearly had a roll in the scuffle.
