While the Monterey Motorsports Reunion is more a chance to see some of motorsports' greatest racing cars in action, that doesn't mean the drivers aren't pushing hard for a win. But in the case of this unfortunate Chevrolet Monza, its driver quite literally drove one of its wheels to failure.

The spokes on the racer's wheel shattered, causing the car to wreck and dispatching the wheel high into the air. Following its liberation from the hub, the tire found its way into the stands where, thankfully, none of the spectators were injured by its landing. The Monza's driver, Ken Epsman, walked away from the crash.

Thanks to some very lucky timing, we managed to uncover video of the entire scary incident. Take a look.

Remember, folks, if a wheel and tire goes into the stands, IT'S YOURS TO KEEP!

There's a good reason to run forged wheels…..stock cast are not a good idea after a few races...

The Dekon Monza is cool.  Sorry to see that happen.

Was this an old BBS wheel?  The Monza IMSA cars used to run those.

I am in that video in the front row. It was quite the sight and somewhat sketchy. The race was really good up until that point. The other note  worthy  part of that race was Adam Carolla was in that class with his flame throwing 280z. It is a shame the Monza and 935 didn't get to finish their battle.

Why didn't the driver run onto the hot track looking for a fight?
      What, too soon?
