John Hennessey has stopped by Jay Leno's Garage for a second time to show off the 2012 Hennessey Venom GT. Last time the tuner-turned-supercar-maker visited the comedian's garage, Leno didn't get a shot behind the wheel of the Venom GT because the vehicle had yet to be legalized in the States. That was then. Now, the 1,200 horspeower beast has all of its paperwork in order, and Hennessey has been kind enough to hand over the keys to one very yellow Venom GT. Leno proceeds to take the machine out into the wild for a brief frolic through public streets.

What does he think? Surprisingly enough, Leno compares the vehicle to his Ariel Atom, albeit with considerably more power. That's high praise considering how lithe and well-balanced the Atom is. Leno also spends plenty of time pontificating on just how much cabin room the Venom GT offers, even for a six-foot tall comedian like himself. Hit the jump to check out the video.

      2700lbs, 1200hp, no traction control. I don't have any illusions about my driving skills, if I had the opportunity--I'd pass cause this thing would KILL me!!

      Paraphrased the 4:45 to 5:05 marks in the video "6.2 liter LS2 found in the C5 Z06." Literally, everything is wrong with that statement. 6.2 liters is offered in the current LS3, LS2 is 6.0 liters, and the C5 Z06 came with a 5.7 liter LS6. I am sure he knows his stuff, but that made me do a double take.

      How is this street legal without Airbags, ABS or Traction/Stability Control. I'm pretty sure all of those are mandated in the US on production cars. In fact, isn't the Elise/Exige no longer sold here because it's Airbag exemption expired and the US gov't wouldn't renew it?

        Thinking about it, he might be able to get away with it in some states if it's registered as a kit car. I know in Michigan new sand rails and buggies are street legal because they can be reg'd as kit cars.

        He didn't say anything about it not having an airbag.

        Cars have to meet certain production numbers to fall under those mandates. I think this doesn't meet those numbers. At 5 cars built thus far I would guess that's the reason.

      It's been far too long since the last Hennessey installment here on AB... I'm not a fan of Hennessey in any way, shape or form. I will give credit first and that is that this car looks pretty good. Not great -- but pretty good. That's where it ends... $1M for a kit car "engineered" by Hennessey??? Not in my wildest dreams! After wasting 12+ minutes of my life watching this video (I am a Leno fan) I came to two conclusions. One, John looked like he was praying to a higher being during the test drive hoping the thing would stay together. Or is the guy just that goofy that he makes those faces on a regular basis? Second, the moral of this car is to buy the very last one and hope that it's "refined" by that point. John made reference to each vehicle being "refined" as they go along. I feel sorry for the guy that has #2 or #3... I understand that all coachbuilder-type cars are refined over time but that was not good salesmanship or marketing in my humble opinion. Good luck with this one, John. Until the next Hennessey installment on AB (John dragging this against a stock, base Vette to prove it's worthiness?)...

          Hey douchebag. Last time we had a run-in, I invited you to my house in South Carolina so I could show you around my car and motorcycle collection before laying a beat down on you. What ever happened with that offer? Get over your man crush, pu$$y.

        Yeah, it looks pretty good because it's obviously a stretched Lotus. I agree with all your other points as well.

      Who gives a rat's turd about the unfunniest fool on TV? Once again auto blog sticks their head up leno's butt hoping to find nuggets of gold and instead they get poop all over their faces.

          So just because it had a Lotus shifter, it means it's a Lotus? Oh, so now that it has a Ford GT shifter, it's a Ford GT? Good god that was a major fail if I ever saw one.

          Considering he mentioned the previous prototype had the Lotus Shifter... It's a Lotus, much like the Telsa is... This guy is build this car on the Cheap-CHEAP. Quality is nowhere near a Veyron, Lambo, McLaren, Zonda, or Konig. And it shows: just look at Leno, he's not too impressed, probably thinking about how his FordGT is 2x better.

        @buckhorn
        and you can sell the ZR1 left overs to make up for the cost of the lotus. make it a savings of $850k

      what a joke. he is selling a stretched lotus with new drive train for a million? then he thinks that a trackday car is going to beat the veron ss record? its not nearly slippery enough. i would say the top end is 220, and i bet that is dramatic, and scary in that pos. it doesn't even have tires that can take that speed. this retard is smoking crack.
        Elmo
        • 2 Years Ago
        @A
        1. It's NOT stretched Lotus. It's a totally ground up chassis, with the looks and cabin area of a Lotus Exige. 2. Who said this was a track day car? This is a full-on street car. It can be driven on the track very well, as said by numerous reviews. 3. He thinks it will beat the VeYron SS. He hasn't claimed that it will. There's a huge difference between thinking and claiming something. 4. Please, without actually looking on Google, what's the coefficient of drag of this car? I'll take the silence as you admitting you were wrong in saying it is not slippery enough. So please, don't talk like you're this engineer who knows about aerodynamics by just looking at a car.
