Normally, the best place to operate a motor vehicle is in the driver's seat. Someone up near Montreal managed to capture a police officer who hasn't quite figured that out. Instead, the cop is seen sitting on the hood of his cruiser while the automobile slowly rolls to a stop. We're not entirely sure what's going on here, and there's a good chance that someone else is working the controls.

Still, it certainly looks like this cop is trying his hand at vehicular surfing. (He needs to take a lesson from Teen Wolf and stand on the roof.) Click past the jump to watch the clip. Also, a quick note to those capturing video on cell phones – turn your screens to the side, please.

I'm not mad at the cop, I'm mad at the idiot who doesn't know how to video. No wonder the iPhone sells so well, so many of the buyers are idiots who are oblivious to everything and so they just buy what the commercial tells them to buy. Not to say everyone who buys an iPhone is like that, because the iPhone is a good phone (but it's not the only good phone out there), but so many just follow with what everyone else has. The guy who filmed this probably sits in the left lane going under the speed limit all day.

Poor Canada can't afford dash cams, so that's what they come up with?

You guys are idiots! Totally taken out of context. While yes the action of the police officer are questionnable but it was done at low speeds on a crime/accident scene where they needed to search for evidences on several km (about a mile or two). This is not about car surfing. Get your facts straight!

Thank you for repeating the the same thing I said. It's nice to see someone with intelligence commenting once in a while.

Wow, people can be thick headed at times and AutoBlog, this is definitely a new low. The cop is clearly filming the stretch of road that was before or after an accident. If you were not so busy trying to get websites hits and actually watched the end of the video, you can clearly see more cop cars ahead of the rolling cop car and what looks to be a 18 wheeler surrounded by road flares. The cop is not out there goofing around like you attempt to allude to. The cop is sitting on the hood to get a better view oppose to sitting in a car.

Don't most police cars already have a forward-facing video camera?

Couldn't do that leaning out the window? Couldn't do that with a $20 suction-cup camera mount? Couldn't do that with duct tape and/or zip-ties? Couldn't do that while walking? Outrage is cheap. Reasoned dialog is the better path.

Wow really? You clearly have not reasoned with intelligence for quite some time. "Couldn't do that leaning out the window?" You assume the cop is fit enough to lean outside a window, while holding a camera steady with 1 hand.. I like to see you try it and end up with a stable picture. "Couldn't do that with a $20 suction-cup camera mount?" You expect the cops to have such equipment like a suction mount for a video camera.. you do realize cop does not equal photographer. Couldn't do that with duct tape and/or zip-ties? So at a scene of an accident, you expect a cop to take precious time from his/her duties to use duct tape and twist ties to rig something up. Couldn't do that while walking? You ever try holding camera still while walking? It's difficult and defines the phrase shaky cam I suggest you do some research on reasoned dialog and follow it up with educating yourself on common sense. , or y

Since when does leaning out a window need a gym membership?

"I must ask, do you need to be fitter to lean out a window or to balance on the hood of a moving car? Since when does leaning out a window need a gym membership?" Wow some of the people that comment straight up lack intelligence, and you prove my point. First off, being fit doesn't mean you need to belong to a gym. You don't learn good balance by simply signing up for a gym membership. Second, the car is crawling, so yes, you would need to be more fit to lean out the window than to balance on the car's hood. And since when does sitting on a car's hood, especially that car, require as much balance as leaning out the car.

And where in the traffic code does it say that cops are allowed to break the law when doing accident reconstructions. "I'm a police officer in the performance of my duty" is not an omnibus excuse for doing something that non-cops would be arrested for.
