Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG looks good in Gran Turismo 5, too [w/VIDEO]

Here at Autoblog, some of the background chatter re: Forza 3 vs. Gran Turismo 5 reaches Ford vs. Chevy levels of fervor – this blogger and our Editor-in-Chief get into it on IM fairly regularly. You see, Forza is one of few topics that gets our generally mild-mannered Neff all exercised. We usually go back and forth a bit, with Neff touting the virtues of Xbox Live and dissing the PS3 in general. The conversation usually ends after he's asked how many Xbox 360s have died on him (Editor's Note: Only one, thank you very much).
Jibber-jabber aside, one thing that's obvious to all interested parties is that that both games look great, and that car variety won't be a problem. Earlier this week, word circulated that the gull-winged Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG would be one of the cars making the GT5 roster. Today, Daimler released images of the car in-game. Spoiler alert: it looks cool. What's not cool is that Gran Turismo aficionados are likely at least six months away from the promised land. Check out the images in the gallery below, as well as the video embedded after the jump.

That's the old AMG logo, they should update it.

For some reason I just can't seem to get excited about this car. It's nice from the front, and nice from the back, but the whole thing together, especially the profile just doesn't do it for me. I hated the McLaren SLR, but this seems to make that look so beautiful. Maybe it's just me...

I definitely disagree. This isn't stunning, minus maybe the grill/logo and doors, but compared to the SLR, I think it's effing hot.

Oh I just love the profile. It's absolutely classic race-car. I can understand why it's not for everyone, but jeez, it looks like it's an antique 1959 300SL sitting in the garage. So gorgeous to me.

And there's no need to wait, since the PS3 is region free. I pre-ordered mine with my importer today.

Don't get too excited Jorge, the vapor is finally turning into real water but still could turn back to vapor again.

Of course you meant the title to say, "Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG looks ill proportioned and inelegant in Gran Turismo 5, too [w/VIDEO]."

Enough with the damn videos. RELEASE THE GAME ALREADY! This is getting downright embarrassing.

Not a fan of the "live action" mixed with the GT5 playback. Wish it was all just the car in GT5.

I think they were trying to show how close to real life it looks in the game.
Stumpy 2:28PM (9/25/2009)
As much as I love Gran Turismo, I think showing the real life makes the game look not as good. Maybe that is just me though.
Regardless, I would sell one of my kidneys for a PS3, GT5, The Steering wheel and a HDTV to play it on.
Actually, might have to do that so I can afford all of it...

I don't know why Gran Turismo insists on using front license plates on most of its cars. At least this one is less obtrusive, though.

I'm sorry, but the sls just isn't a good-looking car.

I don't look at it as one vs the other, they're both different takes on the same genre.
GT4 offered a more complete single-player sim experience - used car shop, license tests, game modes like rally and b-spec (if you like). FM2 was otherwise a superior game: multiplayer, graphics, physics, car damage, tuning, painting, etc. I ran in a racing tournament in FM2 for a couple seasons that is probably the most multiplayer fun I've had on a console.
Couple hundred hours in both games, I love them both.
The Forza 3 demo is a sizable improvement over Forza 2. Graphics are sharper and much more detailed, the game feels like tire modeling and suspension are more accurate.
GT5 gets a nod with more realistic lighting model, based on GT5:P, and the FM3 demo. GT5 screenshots are not _really_ representative of gameplay, but they sure are pretty.
GT5 may well eke out a slight edge with graphics and physics. I'm hopeful to see how PD implements damage, FM3 demo is still pretty weak. Multiplayer could go either way, and both games are improving the single player experience.
I'm planning to buy both. $60 is a fantastic value for the hours I'll spend with FM3. If GT5 somehow completely eclipses it, I won't regret it for an instant.

Until GT5 is actually out and available, no one will be able to properly compare it and FM3. To have a valid graphical comparison, you have to compare the games mode to mode. Live play. Replay. Photo-mode.
My guess is GT5 will beat FM3 in all three categories, especially photo-mode and replay. From the FM3 demo, it still looks a bit plasticy. But how nice a game looks, isn't as important as how the cars drive, and the rest of the online and offline components.
