Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Gumball 3000 start in Santa Monica, CA

Entrants of the 11th running of the Gumball 3000 started their cross-country rally Friday afternoon, cheered on by hundreds of fans as the cars began their journey at the Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles. The rally will also stop in Las Vegas, Sante Fe, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and Orlando before finishing in Miami. Judging from the selection of vehicles, supercars were most definitely the rides of choice this year. There were a pair of Bugatti Veyrons, a handful of Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLRs, a Jaguar XJ220, SSC Ultimate Aero, Audi R8, and dozens of your standard Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins. Of course, there were also a few non-standard rides, like this bio-diesel Land Rover, a metallic-green lowrider, and this bad boy. We were on hand to see the cars off as well, and brought back plenty of high-res photos that can be seen in the gallery below.

@zamafir while I see what you're saying with the "popping out" I would hope that most of these cars stand out anyways. And I kinda figured (hoped) the stickers would come off but thanks for clarifying

Gold Veyron- yeah sick, it makes me sick, whoever puts gold, chrome, platinum and other crap like that on cars, should get 1 year in jail.

No worries. oddly enough, most do NOT stand out in the OC or greater LA area.

I did the Gumball from NY to LA in 2002. It was definitely a once in a lifetime thing to say you did it. Lot's of nice car's driven by people with more money than they know what to do with ( I did not fall in this category, I do not have money).
However, the whole event did not live up to the hype......

That donk looks sweet if you ask me.

Yup, just as awesome beside you on the freeway as it was heading to stops (and croaking). Next to the mustang cobra with the emblem that spit at photogs, it was my most entertaining pick for this year's rally.

For all you class warfare types, don't hate or be bitter of these rich people. Try using your brain to *think before you hate. Thank these rich people for supporting the economy by wasting a lot of their own $$$.

There's a Gallardo from Romania at page 74. How did he get all the way there :O :D

Thats not a lowrider, thats a f***ing donk. One of the most idiotic car modifications ever. Right behind "Lambo Doors" and Neon.

you know i never thought my dad would be right but 'tis true money may buy a lot of things but brains ain't one of 'em
        • 5 Years Ago
Way to go calling that a lowrider... it's at 4 times the stock height... I hate donks.
Ya I don't see how a donk could be confused with a lowrider...while they're similar in most respects, the difference that sets em apart is pretty obvious lol
      • 5 Years Ago
lowriders are nothing like a DONK

Lowrider = culture in the Mexican-American "Chicano" culture

DONK= Showing off who can affored the biggest ugliest rimes

so before people start saying lowriders are ugly or tacky, what about hotrods, ratrods, classic trucks??

Its all about what you were brought up by, I personaly would love to get my hands on a 64 Impala SS or a Monte Carlo, Low and Slow baby!

As someone who was actually there on Saturday, I can say that all this whining about "noveau rich douchebags" is misinformed. After all, these people are taking their cars out of the garage and actually driving them, and letting the public ogle them to boot. A great many of them (Tony Hawk included) were more than happy to talk about the custom bits on their rides, like the 630hp Hennessey-tuned engine in the Hawkman's SUV, or the carbon fiber-coated Porsche sitting nearby.

While there was certainly a fair amount of douchebaggery on display, it's unfair to indiscriminately criticize the participants. Thanks to them, I now have 150+ pics of cars that I might never see in the "wild" again, and I now know what it feels like to have a Porsche GT2 and a Ferrari 430 Scuderia zoom by a foot away from my face as they launch out of the parking lot.

Yup. You've hit it on the head. It's the same reason to go to cars and coffee or any of the rallies. These sort of cars get boring simply sitting in parking lots, or parked on popular streets. Seeing them actually wrung out is what draws spectators. As entertaining as the start was, it was way to busy for me. I hopped on the freeway with the rally and joined them later and let me say, I've never been a huge fan of the SLR, until having it spin donuts 3' from me :).

Truly a wonderfully entertaining day. I've never heard any german engine produce the sound that SLR did at full throttle less than a meter away. I'll never tire of people actually driving cars like these, or driving with them.

No mather how many HP they have, Audis 6 are just Audis, imagine somebody turning up at Gumball with a Passat.... or Skoda Superb.... Audis are right in this category. On the other hand, the whole event screams stupidity and "above law" mentality so few naive Audi owners only make the event more pathetic. And a Dodge???? Really?

BTW, in 2007, the rally got cancelled in Bratislava, Slovakia, after a fatal hit and run accident earlier in the Balkans. Another proof that most of Gumball drivers have neither the ability nor the IQ to drive these cars. Which brings me back to Audis....
