    Retro Racing Games Reimagined

First off, we're afraid these are not screenshots of newly updated, HD remakes of classic racing video games – as much as we want to see some of these games come back in one way or another.

These are images created by Eric Yui, who took it upon himself to imagine remastered versions of classic driving game favorites using the very modern graphics of Forza Horizon 3.

Yui told us that he was inspired create some throwback images while cruising Horizon 3's virtual Australia in a Ford Crown Victoria. He said he had the soundtrack to Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 playing in the background, and he "was hit by a wave of nostalgia."

Before he created the images, Yui said he started with making some videos. Once he had the right cars with the right paint schemes for each game, he recorded some footage and added background music from the original games. You can check out his videos at this link. See if you can guess all the games represented.

Yui decided he could do a bit more though. He said the video project reminded him of when he made some tribute images of old Gran Turismo games in Gran Turismo 6. It was only natural to do the same in Forza, but this time with more racing titles than just GT.

Having the right cars for each image wouldn't be enough for a convincing screenshot, though. Yui explained that he made sure to pick environments and driving situations most associated with each title. Whether that was a gritty industrial setting for Need For Speed: Most Wanted...

...or a picturesque coastal road with drifting Ferraris for arcade classic Out Run. Once Yui had his shot, he said he did a bit of photo editing to get the colors right. He said he also listened to each game's soundtrack while creating these photos so that he "got the 'mood' of the game right."

    Project Gotham Racing 4

According to Yui, the most difficult image to make was this one for Project Gotham Racing 4. However, it might not be for the reason you think. Yui said that he really associated expensive hypercars like the Ferrari Enzo with the game, but he didn't have enough in-game cash for such vehicles. He said it took a while to settle on a more affordable car, such as the TVR here, that would still capture the feel of the game.

The images in this gallery aren't the only ones Yui created. He has many more at his blog page Yui Photography. We highly recommend you check them out.
