Overview

The BMW i8 is a new direction for both the german manufacturer and the industry, a plug-in hybrid sports car with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic passenger compartment that revolutionizes manufacturing. The i8 is motivated by a 228-hp turbo three-cylinder engine that powers the rear wheels and a 129-hp electric motor and 7.1 kW lithium-ion battery pack that power the front wheels, giving the i8 all-wheel drive capability. The battery can be charged in 1.5 hours with a 220 volt charger. There are three trim levels known as Worlds: Giga, Tera and Pure Impulse; and they are meant to make interior color and option selection easier. Standard safety features include LED headlights and brakelights, eight airbags, an alarm system, BMW Assist eCall with Emergency Request and stolen vehicle tracking, surround view cameras, frontal collision prevention and speed limit alert info. Other standard features include a harman/kardon premium sound system, heated front seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. The i8 is unchanged for 2017.
