Overview

The BMW X5 defines an expanding group of big, powerful SUVs that shine for their on-pavement agility and responsive acceleration, with an emphasis on safety, comfort and luxury appointments. It features BMW's xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, and offers optional third-row seating that increases capacity to seven passengers. The X5 is available in five trim levels: xDrive35i, xDrive35i Premium, xDrive35i Sport Activity, xDrive35d and xDrive50i. The xDrive35i variants get a new single-turbo 300-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, while the xDrive35d carries over the 265-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder diesel. At the top of the power range, the xDrive50i boasts a new 400-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The xDrive35i and xDrive50i get a new eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, while the xDrive35d retains its six-speed automatic; both transmissions are equipped with Steptronic manual shift mode. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tires, bi-xenon adaptive headlamps, dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery and a CD player with MP3 capability; additional trim-specific features include a Panorama glass moonroof, 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, genuine wood trim and a USB port. Heated front and rear seats, satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a voice-activated hard drive-based navigation system, including 12 gigabytes of dedicated media storage and DVD video capability, are among the available options. Safety features on every X5 include anti-lock disc brakes, Dynamic Stability Control with traction control and rollover sensor, active anti-whiplash front head restraints and a tire pressure monitor, along with front side-impact airbags and overhead curtain airbags for all rows. New for 2011, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go, as well as a Lane Departure Warning system, become available. For 2011, the BMW X5 gets a facelift, with fresh exterior styling and two new engines. The previous model year's xDrive30i is replaced by the xDrive35i, outfitted with a new N55 single turbo engine, while the xDrive48i becomes the xDrive50i, equipped with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the X6. Additionally, a new 8-speed automatic transmission and Brake Energy Regeneration are standard on all but the xDrive35d.
