    General Motors may have parred down its brand portfolio, but it still has more under its umbrella than most. That's why, while a company like Ford might market the same vehicle under its own name in markets around the world, GM uses different brands in different markets. But no two are aligned quite as closely as Opel in Europe and Buick in the United States and China.

    Opel had an early hit with the Adam, a minicar named after the company's founder, but it appears sales are now tapering off, leading the General Motors-owned German brand to ease off production.

    For a company with a long tradition of grand touring convertibles, it's almost unseemly that General Motors doesn't offer a properly relaxed four-seat convertible in North America. There's the Chevrolet Camaro, of course, but it's not big on rear-seat space and it doesn't offer that sort of serene demeanor that many open-air buyers crave. We're thinking of something more refined and, dare we say, elegant. Something a bit closer to the Opel Cascada.

    According to Automotive News, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson has his eye on a couple of overseas models for Buick. The General's funky Opel Adam subcompact and Cascada four-place convertible are apparently on the executive's wish list, as he openly expressed regret that they weren't developed for the US during an investor conference earlier this month.

    Opel's bottom line suffers from a medical condition called "hemorrhaging" and investment bank Morgan Stanley isn't alone in believing that General Motors should let the German brand go. But they haven't seen the Opel Adam. The diminutive hatch that can come off as a little bulbous up front and busy all over depending on the angle of the photo has a welcoming presence in person.
