China is getting its own version of the new Passat, and, big surprise, it's going to have a stretched wheelbase. China Car Times is reporting that the embiggened version of the next generation Passat will be 120mm (about 4.5 inches) longer than the sedan other markets will receive to allow for a roomier back seat.

The stretched version of the Passat makes sense because in the Chinese market, there exists a bigger group of customers more eager to be driven in luxury than to have a vehicle that is fun to drive. And since V-Dub's sedan is used in China as a livery vehicle, the extra 4.5 inches will come in handy. The stretch Passat, which will be built in China, will reportedly arrive in dealerships early in 2011.

      I don't get why the Chinese need stretch versions of all these German mid-size sedans. There are these things called full-size sedans that already exist.

        Because these cars are often used as taxis and when used as private vehicles, the owners sit in back while their driver sits in front. When labor costs are low, traffic congested, and parking limited, a lot of car owners opt to employ a driver.

      What a generation jump; VW China has been stuck with the same Passat (Santana) since 1984.

      Here in North America, it was known as the VW Quantum. Yeah ...when was the last time you saw one of those on the road?

        You could buy the newer Passats in China as well, it's just that they kept making the Santana as well. VW actually sells several generations of both the Passat and Jetta in China.

      These Passat stories are confusing because they always seem to hint that the US is going to get a new Passat even though earlier VW stated we would not.

      However, a stretched version could make for a great replacement for the Town Car as the std livery vehicle here and provide a steady annual sales rate. And they could follow Lincoln's lead and never have to update the car for a decade. Easy $$$$?

        Actually, they're hoping to avoid transport and currency risks by building in-country in one of their major markets.

      Coz usually one individual Chinese family got only one car, and there r not much "full-sized" sedans available around here, and most prefer a so called "luxury space" in the back...I know it's quite stupid. Stretched B5 still beat unstrectched B6 in the market.

      A lot of Chinese who can afford foreign brand cars are rich enough to hire drivers, far richer than average population. Although made in China, those foreign brands are still a premium and cost both arms and legs.

      As for fun of driving? There is no such thing in China. The roads are terrible, traffic is congested all over, unless driving at midnight, and the locals taxis drive like drunken maniacs. Pedestrians think cars are made of jelly beans and act like they own the roads. Not to mention the fact that parking spots are non-existant.
      One reason they have big cars with strectch body and tiny engines is because most cars just sit there in the traffic ilding.

      When I flew back to U.S. and saw the size of of the parking lot near the airport, I thank all the gods in the world for the good 'ol U.S. of A for the spacious landmass.

        Yeah, people have to realize that most nice cars cost a lot more money in China because of taxes, since the average person is still fairly poor so anybody who can afford a nice car is considered pretty wealthy-so taxes are really high on almost all luxury goods. So anybody who can afford one of these cars can easily afford a chauffeur. The low average wage there makes it pretty easy to hire a driver if you have enough money to buy a car since the wages are very low compared to how much the cars cost.
        But a lot of wealthy people enjoy driving themselves too-it's apparently a popular hobby amongst people with money but they usually enjoy long drives through the country and not sitting in horrible traffic for their daily commute-a driver is pretty much a must if you live in some place like Beijing where traffic is a friggin' nightmare.

        If you read the article it's because the car is being used as livery vehicle in China. In other words, a taxi, and in a taxi you want a vehicle that provides for maximum comfort and ingress and egress ease for the passengers.

        Something those extra 4.5" will provide.

      Would never buy another VW. My wifes 2010 VW CC has been nothing but trouble. Electronic distance sensors, bulbs, and I can't say enough about the POS DSG transmission.

      When I went to China on business, I was surprised to see quiete a number of folks are tall, 5'10-6'. The majority of the people living in north china and elsewhere are tall.

      The stereotype is also understandable seeing a lot of asians in this country are vertically challenged (short), most of these folks came from other countries such as vietnam, camobodia and other far east asian nations of which the majority are short people.

      And all of these people are lumped into the "chinese" asian category.
