Rimac races Concept_One against Porsche 918

Zaps through the 1/4-mile in 9.9 seconds.

The fight for bragging rights gets pretty tough in the thin air of the supercar stratosphere, but the Rimac Concept_One isn't one to back down from a battle, apparently. After racing and roasting the Ferrari LaFerrari, the crew from Croatia set its sights on the Porsche 918 – the acid green example owned by the Alejandro Salomon of Salomondrin YouTube channel fame, to be specific.

A short-notice showdown was to take place when the lightning-quick electric coupe traveled to California for Monterey Car Week, but finding a safe, legal stretch of tarmac proved impossible. So, with the next stop on this Concept_One's itinerary being Detroit for official certification, a head-to-head matchup was arranged at a 1/4-mile Milan Dragway there.

The contest was filmed for a special episode of the Bangin' Gears video series, and we''ll get to the results in a minute, but for our money – $1.99 to watch the full NSFW version now, instead of waiting for three censored installments over the next few weeks – the footage featuring company founder Mate Rimac demonstrating the incredible performance and flexibility of the trick high-tech drivetrain, with its 1,088 horsepower and two-speed, dual-clutch gearboxes, was just as enjoyable as watching this battery-powered monster do its thing on a properly-prepared dragstrip for the first time.

Now, about that race. The two tore down the tarmac together about a half-dozen times, and as you might imagine, it was close. The 918 did manage to edge out the Concept_One on a single run, but (at least) three times the car from Croatia beat the Porsche's best time, its top result being an awesome 9.9 seconds. Yes, nine point nine seconds. Damn.

So, while Elon Musk might say that the new Tesla Model S 100D is the quickest current production car out there (from 0-to-60, at least), that claim is certainly now more tenuous. Not to mention that the Concept_One might be slightly slower than its evil twin, the Rimac Concept_S. We can only hope that those two – the One and the 100D – meet up soon and put that argument to rest.
