VIDEO: Scale-model R/C off-roading

We like offroading vids as much as anyone, because they show just how much many of the SUVs we roll in are actually capable of. We're also suckers for cool toys, and the video that follows the jump combines both of these interests to great effect. Pretty cool stuff...enjoy.
UPDATE: Second vid added that shows this year's event. Thanks to Matt (the guy behind it all) for the link in the comments.

From the looks of it, Tamiya has a newish (Or not, I don't keep track like I used to) Ford F350 kit with straight axles and leaf springs, which seems like a great foundation for these things.
The scale super swampers are a nice touch, too.

Its the tamiya highlift

Really the only thing similar you can buy is the Tamiya F-350 High Lift. It's too bad, because an F-350 with a 2 foot lift, relatively small tires, and exposed frame is a poseur offroad vehicle! I guess they had to go with that body and lift style to get a wide audience, but what about a Wrangler? In any case, the interesting vehicles are DIY projects. The hobby for scale crawlers and trail vehicles is apparently always scrounging for parts from discontinued toy grade vehicles, especially at smaller scales. For example, smaller trucks are often using Super Savage Monster Truck (or something) axles-- this is a cheap toy that Wal Mart sold a long time ago.
All the attention in the RC world goes to big nitro powered racing vehicles that look and perform nothing like smaller scale versions of real cars-- which IMO defeats the purpose. It's a shame.

This is RC Rockcrawling. They do competitions that are similar to the Trials type done with real 4x4s.

I am the one who created that video and I'm also a co-owner of http://www.scale4x4rc.us
This video was from our first event held back in January of this year.
We just recently had our 2nd event this past weekend and had a great turn out. The video for that can be found here.

I think that's some great maneuvering and car control! Most people, including myself, would have a hard enough time getting an RC car through those tennis ball markers on a flat parking lot, much less on the rocks!

THAT was cool! It looked real when there wasn't any humans in the shots.
