2021 Toyota Highlander
The 2021 Toyota Highlander represents the second model year after a complete redesign ushered in an all-new generation. The current version is only a bit bigger than before, as Toyota recognized that its predecessor being slightly smaller than most other three-row crossovers was a just-right size for many existing customers. That said, its third-row seat and cargo capacity are smaller than most competitors, so the new Highlander may not be for everyone. Still, its attractive and well-made interior with the latest Toyota infotainment technology helps it stand tall in the segment along with greatly improved road manners and superior fuel economy provided by the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid model.
New for 2021 is the Highlander XSE model. It combines the existing XLE’s upgraded interior appointments with special chassis upgrades to achieve a more engaging driving experience. Reworked steering and a stiffer, sport-tuned suspension are among the highlights, though certainly don’t expect a three-row sports car or rock-hard ride. It also gets unique styling, carbon-fiber-look interior trim and exclusive upholstery consisting of SofTex vinyl and cloth inserts. The latter can be supplanted by red leather.
The Highlander comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, but all-wheel drive is an option (like the RAV4, top trim levels get a more sophisticated torque-vectoring AWD system). EPA-estimated fuel economy is effectively 23 mpg combined regardless of FWD or AWD. The Highlander Hybrid produces 240 horsepower and gets an exceptional 36 mpg combined with FWD and 35 mpg combined with AWD.
The base L trim level is very well-equipped, and indeed, the next-up LE doesn't really add that much. There's nothing wrong with keeping things simple. The upper trim levels elevate the Highlander into luxury territory, but with it comes a price that nudges toward $50,000. We'd strongly consider the Hybrid as its fuel economy really does give the Highlander a unique attribute in a crowded segment.
