Jeep was born in the midst of World War II, out of a competition for a light-reconnaissance and general-purpose vehicle to serve in the European and Pacific theaters. The design was the work of tiny American Bantam, but the form it would take was influenced by Ford and Willys. Willys' modifications became the final design, and while Ford produced many of the vehicles as the GPW, it was Willys who sold the civilian models (CJs) after the war. The CJ series spanned from the CJ-2 through the CJ-7/8 before being replaced by the Wrangler, which is produced to this day. Along the way, the Jeep brand passed from Willys to Kaiser, then to AMC, and finally to Chrysler and is now part of the FCA family. The current Jeep lineup includes the Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Compass and Cherokee, as well as the upcoming Scrambler pickup.
