Video: Porsche owner electrifies his 928

Over the years, we've seen the boxer engines ripped out of numerous Porsche 911s and replaced with electric motors and racks of batteries, but this may be the first time we've seen it done to a 928. Jeff McCabe started by dumping the V8 engine from his sports car and then ripping out everything else that wasn't absolutely essential. That included 28 pounds of hardware from each door, wheels and tires that shed 12 pounds, 38 pounds of motors and gears to pop up the headlights and plastic replacements for the windows. In all, McCabe dispensed with 1,700 pounds before adding 1,300 pounds of batteries.

McCabe originally installed lead-acid batteries that gave a range of 40-45 miles. Those have now been replaced with 750 lithium iron-phosphate cells arranged in series and parallel to give 160 volts and 25 kilowatt-hours of capacity. The electric 928 can now go about 115-120 miles with a top speed of 85 miles per hour. The speed limitation is due to the fact that first, fourth and fifth gears were dispensed with in the name of mass reduction. Check out the video after the jump.
