<div align="center"><strong><em><small>2009 Mazda Tribute - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />Mazda already has one of the first non-Toyota hybrids to hit the market with its Tribute SUV (above), but that model is only on sale in California, with hybrid tech from Ford Motor Company. Now that Ford has a much smaller percentage stake in the automaker, Mazda cannot rely on the Blue Oval to develop its future hybrid technology. With hybrid sales in its home market of Japan booming, the Hiroshima-based automaker is rumored to be looking for potential partners.<br /><br />According to <em>Reuters</em>, Japan's <em>Nikkei</em> business daily is reporting that Mazda is in talks with Toyota to license the Japanese juggernaut's hybrid technology for future models. Toyota and Mazda are thus far denying the reports, but <em>Nikkei</em> quotes anonymous sources saying the deal could include the licensing of batteries, motors, and other vital components. The publication further reports that the first Mazda-badged hybrid could arrive as soon as 2013. That's two years earlier than Mazda research and development boss Seita Kanai speculated earlier in the year. <br /><br />The move would benefit Toyota by boosting revenue and increasing economies of scale. Some analysts speculate that Toyota, which has been in the global hybrid game longer than anyone, could capitalize by leasing out its gas-electric tech to more automakers. Toyota already has an arrangement with Nissan to supply technology for use in its Altima Hybrid.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/">Mazda Tribute Hybrid SUV</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/01/2008_mazda_tribute_h_132_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/01/2008_mazda_tribute_h_015_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/01/2008_mazda_tribute_h_085_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/01/2008_mazda_tribute_h_088_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/mazda-tribute-hybrid-suv/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/01/2008_mazda_tribute_h_137_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/GCA-GreenBusiness/idUSTRE56E86D20090716">Reuters</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/report-toyota-in-talks-to-provide-mazda-with-hybrid-tech/">REPORT: Toyota in talks to provide Mazda with hybrid tech</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 11:28:00 EST. The EV version of the SLS will drive all four wheels by means of an individual motor for each corner. It will not however use wheel hub motors, since those add too much unsprung mass. The motors will be mounted just inboard of the suspension components. <br /><br />Energy will be stored in a 48 kWh liquid cooled lithium ion battery pack running down the central tunnel. The combined output of the electric drive system is 392 kW (526 hp) and 880 Nm (649 lb-ft), which compares to 420 kW (563 hp) and 649 Nm (479 lb-ft) for the 6.3-liter V8 in the conventional SLS. Mercedes claims it will accelerate to 62 mph in four seconds. No range is being quoted at this time, but given that the battery capacity is lower than the Tesla Roadster and the car is larger, it will likely be well under 200 miles. No timeline for the electric version is being quoted, although earlier rumors placed it at 2015. <br /><br />One of the reasons that Daimler said it was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/19/daimler-buys-10-stake-in-tesla-will-supply-parts-and-engineeri/">investing $50 million in Tesla Motors</a> was the upstart's ability to move quickly and develop systems faster than could be done at Daimler. Given that, we may well see the electric SLS sooner rather than later. Check out our high-res gallery of (internal combustion) Mercedes SLS prototypes below and the official press release <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/07/16/officially-official-mercedes-to-produce-electric-sls-gullwing/">after the jump</a>.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/">Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/004_slsamg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/000_slsamg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/001_slsamg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/002_slsamg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-benz-sls-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/003_slsamg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Daimler]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/officially-official-mercedes-to-produce-electric-sls-gullwing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: Mercedes to produce electric SLS gullwing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/officially-official-mercedes-to-produce-electric-sls-gullwing/">Officially Official: Mercedes to produce electric SLS gullwing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 10:57:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong><em><small>MINI Crossover Concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />Thanks to a few eagle-eyed BMW fans with a handy penchant for tracking trademark filings, we may know the name of the upcoming and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/spy-shots-mini-cooper-crossover-spotted-in-california/">oft-spied</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Mini+Crossover/">Mini crossover</a>: the Countryman. If this is indeed the case, the badge would go hand-in-hand with BMW's current naming convention for its Mini line, which includes the extended-length Clubman in addition to the standard Cooper and convertible. We're <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/28/2011-mini-crossover-coming-to-frankfurt-in-production-form/">expecting</a> the new CUV to debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/frankfurt-auto-show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> in production form as a 2011 model.<br /><br />Interestingly, BMW also trademarked the name ActiveE, which some are speculating will be the moniker applied to the automaker's upcoming electric vehicles as it matches up quite nicely with BMW's present ActiveHybrid series. Last year, the German automaker reserved the name eDrive, and it seems the two labels could somehow be paired together as part of the company's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/projecti">Project I initiative</a>.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/">MINI Crossover Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/01_mini_crossover_high_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/02_mini_crossover_high_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/03_mini_crossover_high_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/04_mini_crossover_high_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/05_mini_crossover_high_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.germancarzone.com/new-bmw-models-vehicles/18705-latest-bmw-trademark-filings-9.html">German Car Zone</a> via <a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/07/14/bmw-registers-new-names-activee-and-countryman/">BMW Blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/bmw-trademarks-countryman-for-mini-crossover-name/">BMW trademarks "Countryman" for Mini crossover name?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 10:30:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Ford Focus EV "mule" - </small></strong></em><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />The premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, reportedly plans to announce a major incentive program for plug-in vehicles today in Toronto. Ontario has already given several billion dollars to General Motors and Chrysler and wants to help boost the industry further to try and recoup some of its "investment." To that end, McGuinty plans to offer tax incentives of up to $10,000 toward the purchase of plug-in vehicles.<br /><br />No details are available yet, but the plan would likely be similar to a U.S. program, with graduated incentives of up to $7,500 depending on the capacity of the battery. A wide array of plug-ins are expected to arrive over the next several years, including the Chevrolet Volt, Ford's Transit Connect and Focus based EVs, Toyota's PHEV Prius and Nissan's EV, among others. McGuinty will reportedly also pledge to have at least 20 percent of the province's vehicle fleet be plug-ins by 2020.<em> Thanks to everyone who sent this in!</em><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/">ABG Quick Drive: Ford Focus EV mule</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090708/electric_ontario_090714/20090714?s_name=Autos">CTV</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/15/report-ontario-announces-incentives-for-plug-in-vehicles-up-to/">REPORT: Ontario to announce incentives for plug-in vehicles, up to $10K</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 13:59:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><small style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Nissan Dual Injector System - Click above for high-res image gallery</small><br /></div>
<br />We've said it before and we'll say it again - the internal combustion engine has a lot of life left in it. While we fully expect electric cars to make an impact in time, the reality is that the ICE's reign as sales leader won't be coming to an end for at least the next several years, possibly with a little assistance from biofuels. With that in mind, even mild efficiency improvements are always welcome to Otto's good old four-stroke engine.<br /><br />Nissan believes its new Dual Injector System will offer a fuel mileage increase of roughly four percent, a small but important improvement. While larger displacement powerplants will be blessed with direct injection, small-bore motors will get the Dual Injector System. The Japanese automaker says the technology, which splits the fuel squirting duties through twin intake ports, reduces the diameter of fuel droplets by a substantial 60%, thereby improving vaporization.<br /><br />Besides the obvious benefit of improved efficiency, Nissan claims its Dual Injector System costs 60% less than comparable direct injection technology. Plus, the system allows for a 50% reduction in the amount of rare precious metals in the catalytic converter. Check out the press release after the break for all the techy details.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/nissan-dual-injector-system/low/">Nissan Dual Injector System</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/nissan-dual-injector-system/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/nissan_dual_injector_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/nissan-dual-injector-system/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/nissan_dual_injector_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/14/nissan-unveils-new-dual-injector-system-to-boost-efficiency/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nissan unveils new Dual Injector System to boost efficiency</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/14/nissan-unveils-new-dual-injector-system-to-boost-efficiency/">Nissan unveils new Dual Injector System to boost efficiency</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 18:01:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>2008 Chevy Malibu Hybrid - </small></strong></em><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />General Motors' current crop of midsize hybrid sedans are rarely mentioned in the same breath as hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima - let alone the standard-bearing Toyota Prius and its main competitor from Japan, the Honda Insight. According to The General, much of the blame for the slow sales of the Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura hybrids is due to the small mileage improvement of the mild hybrid powertrain compared to a standard four-cylinder and six-speed automatic transmission. No kidding, right?<br /><br />Fortunately, GM apparently has a plan to address its midsize hybrid shortcomings. Speaking to <a href="http://gm-volt.com/2009/07/13/gm-planning-dedicated-high-efficiency-hybrid-sedan/">GM-Volt.com</a>, Chevrolet head Ed Peper said:<br /><blockquote><em>What we are trying to work towards is 'Yes,' we will have other hybrid vehicles (besides the Volt) but we are trying to work towards a dedicated hybrid... We think that's probably a better way for us to go longer term.</em><br /></blockquote>And now for the fun part: Speculation. If GM were to develop a new dedicated midsize hybrid model, it seems likely that it would use its sophisticated 2-Mode Hybrid system in lieu of the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/11/gm-to-discontinue-mild-hybrid-malibu-vue-aura-for-2010-model-y/">mild belt-alternator-starter system</a> currently employed in the Malibu and Aura hybrids. The first production instance of the 2-Mode system in a front-drive application is expected in either the Cadillac SRX or the Chevy Equinox, <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/09/saturn-vue-two-mode-hybrid-dead-equinox-hybrid-wont-arrive-unt/">possibly in 2011</a>. A dedicated hybrid sedan could soon follow using the same drivetrain.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/">2008 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/malibu-hybrid-1280-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/malibu-hybrid-1280-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/malibu-hybrid-1280-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/malibu-hybrid-1280-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-malibu-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2008/09/malibu-hybrid-1280-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><span style="font-weight: bold;"><small>Photos Copyright (C)2008 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></span></em><br />[Source: <a href="http://gm-volt.com/2009/07/13/gm-planning-dedicated-high-efficiency-hybrid-sedan/">GM-Volt.com</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/13/gm-working-on-dedicated-hybrid-sedan/">GM working on dedicated hybrid sedan?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 13:32:00 EST. <br />Honda has confirmed what's been suspected for some time: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/HondaCRZ/">Honda CR-Z</a> is coming next year and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FitHybrid/">Fit Hybrid</a> will be released in late 2010.<br /><br />The brief press release (below the fold) touts the two hybrids as the latest expansion of the automaker's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, along with its focus on highly efficient, lightweight and compact conveyances.<br /><br />The CR-Z, a sporty hybrid inspired by the CRX and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/24/tokyo-motor-show-honda-strike-cr-x-strike-cr-z-concept/">unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007</a>, will go on sale in Japan this February, with the Fit Hybrid hitting shores across the Pacific later next year. Honda hasn't explicitly announced whether the two models will be available in the States, but we'd expect a formal announcement when the production CR-Z and Fit Hybrid debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/TokyoMotorShow/">Tokyo Motor Show</a> this October.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/">Honda CR-Z Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/77470518_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/77470091_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/honda_crz_live_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/honda_crz_live_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/honda-cr-z-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/honda_crz_live_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/13/honda-confirms-production-of-cr-z-fit-hybrid-in-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BREAKING: Honda confirms production of CR-Z, Fit Hybrid in 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/13/honda-confirms-production-of-cr-z-fit-hybrid-in-2010/">BREAKING: Honda confirms production of CR-Z, Fit Hybrid in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 08:58:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Bamboo Taxi - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Increasing powertrain efficiency is just one area in which vehicles' environmental impact can be lessened. A significant portion of the total energy used to operate the vehicle over its lifetime comes from sourcing and processing raw materials into individual vehicle components, as well as transporting finished vehicles to their end customers. <br /><br />With this in mind, new taxis based on renewable materials are being built and used <strike>on Gilligan's Island</strike> in the Filipino town of Tabontabon. The bodywork is made entirely from bamboo -- a grass which, in addition to being strong and lightweight, grows back after it's harvested. Don't expect to see this on the list of IIHS Top Safety Picks anytime soon, but as a low-speed vehicle for use in rural areas, it's an interesting alternative. Even the fuel is renewable, as the engines in these vehicles are powered by coconut oil-based biodiesel. Plus, if you're lucky, maybe you'll be able to split a fare with Ginger or Mary Ann on the way to the Professor's hut. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/">Bamboo Taxis in the Philippines</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/tram-010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/img-5223_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/img-5013_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/img-5011_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/philippines-bamboo-taxi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/img-5218_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/ariel-schwartz/sustainability/bamboo-taxis-arrive-philippines-town">Fast Company</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/12/gilligans-island-tech-coconut-oil-fueled-bamboo-taxi/"><i>Gilligan's Island</i> tech? <br />While owners of the current Tesla Roadster get the benefit of driving their bad ass electric vehicle today, people who are on the list for a 2010 model will get a few benefits that make 2009 owners jealous. <a href="http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/tesla-roadster/3012-2010-cool-new-features.html">Tesla Motors Club</a> member DrComputer wrote about "a conversation with Ted at corporate" that revealed some improvements to the new cars. A tipster sent in a similar list of upgrades. The upgrades include:<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li>New power electronics module</li>
    <li>Better cooling for the power electronics</li>
    <li>Improved AC with variable speed fans<br /></li>
    <li>Built in WiFi cards that connect the Roadster to the Internet (unless you turn the feature off) and gives Tesla the ability to interact with the car remotely. Also, this could open the door to mobile phone apps that talk to the car. <br /></li>

<br />Both sources mention the ability to switch vehicle performance modes - from Range to Standard or Performance (but not back to Range) - with the key instead of needing to change modes via the screen. There has been no official confirmation about these upgrades, but none of them would surprise us if they were true. <em>Thanks to Dan for the tip!</em><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/">Tesla Roadster Sport</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/01_tesla_roadster_sport_rend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/02_tesla_roadster_sport_rend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/03_tesla_roadster_sport_rend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/04_tesla_roadster_sport_rend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/tesla-roadster-sport/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/05_tesla_roadster_sport_rend_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/tesla-roadster/3012-2010-cool-new-features.html">Tesla Motors Club</a> | Photo by JUNG YEON-JE/AFP/Getty]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/10/rumormill-2010-tesla-roadster-gets-upgrades-including-wifi-conn/">Rumormill: 2010 Tesla Roadster gets upgrades including wifi connectivity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 17:59:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><small style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">2010 GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid - Click above for high-res image gallery</small><br /></div>
<br />General Motors has finally added the 2-Mode Hybrid powertrain to its top-level GMC Yukon Denali. There aren't any mechanical changes to the gas-electric drivetrain that's been available since 2008 in the standard-grade Yukon and its platform mates, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. All of which means we'll see a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine with 332 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque and up to a 6,200-pound towing capacity.<br /><br />According to GM, the hybrid hardware is mostly contained in the 2-Mode Electrically Variable Transmission, which features twin electric motors powered by a 300-volt nickel metal hydride battery pack. Expect EPA fuel economy ratings of 21 city, 22 highway for two-wheel drive models and 20/20 when equipped with four-wheel drive.<br /><br />As far as mechanical changes go, the Denali Hybrid will bring the first application of GM's MagnaRide suspension system to the Yukon. As you'd expect in a top-level SUV, the Denali Hybrid will come fully loaded straight from the factory - the only three options will be a sunroof, rear-seat entertainment DVD system and side blind spot alert mirrors. Hit the jump for the full press release.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/">2010 GMC Yukon Hybrid and Denali Hybrid</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid_0001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid_0007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid_0002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid_0003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid-and-denali-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/07/2010-gmc-yukon-hybrid_0004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/officially-official-gmc-adds-hybrid-model-to-yukon-denali-suv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: GMC adds hybrid model to Yukon Denali SUV</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/officially-official-gmc-adds-hybrid-model-to-yukon-denali-suv/">Officially Official: GMC adds hybrid model to Yukon Denali SUV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 13:59:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Fiat 500C with Elle Macpherson - </small></strong></em><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Fiat held a glitzy launch for the convertible version of its super hot supermini at the Whisky Mist in London the other night and swimsuit supermodel Elle Macpherson was the first in the UK to go topless, getting her very own <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/Fiat+500C/">500C</a>. We're told the Australian-born model and actress received the keys to the latest iteration of the Italian-built model outside her <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notting_Hill">Notting Hill</a> home and was soon overheard telling a friend how cool and sexy she thought it was. Of course, Elle knows all about cool and sexy Fiat 500s, having previously owned the original hard top version.<br /><br />Other convertible-celebrating celebrities up in da club with Edoardo Agnelli, the nephew of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Agnelli">Fiat's co-founder</a>, included <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/05/02/whos-plunked-down-100-000-for-a-tesla-roadster-these-guys/">Tesla Roadster buyer</a> and Black-Eyed Peas guy will.I.am and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelle_Berrabah">Sugababes' Amelle.</a> Feel free to check out the gallery below of Elle's famous friends posing with her new ride. No, really.<br /><br />While no official decision has yet been made, insiders are saying that the background color change is being considered, "in an effort to show consumers that it is leaner and greener, more focused on fuel efficiency and better able to make quick decisions," says <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31805852/ns/business-autos/">MSNBC</a>. <br /><br />The fuel efficiency meaning of a possible new green logo is easy to understand and the "quick decisions" part reflects a new GM that will likely have 35 percent fewer executives to go along with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/13/gm-ford-job-cuts-closing-in-on-50-in-u-s-chrysler-not-far-b/">fewer employees</a> overall. More announcements on these issues and the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/26/officially-official-gm-to-build-b-segmen-cars-in-lake-orion-mi/">fate of the Spark minicar</a> could come tomorrow, when GM is expected to emerge from bankruptcy.<br /><br />The real color change that GM needs to make, of course, is a shift from red to black - but that's significantly harder than swapping pixels in a logo. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/">Geneva 2009: Chevy Spark</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/spark-2-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/spark-2-1280-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/spark-2-1280-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/spark-2-1280-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-chevy-spark/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/spark-2-1280-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31805852/ns/business-autos/">MSNBC</a> | Logo Image: Adam Morath/AOL]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/the-greenwash-to-end-all-greenwashing-gm-reportedly-pondering-c/">The Greenwash to End All Greenwashing? <div style="text-align: center;"><strong><em><small>DuraCar Quicc! Diva - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />Volkswagen has struck a deal worth "at least 10 million euros" with Wilhelm Karmann GmbH to keep the insolvent coachworks and specialty builder alive so it can reorganize a new company and "focus on building electric-powered cars." That's according to an unsourced report in the <em>Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung</em> that can be found on <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&amp;sid=aISfxjjVYOuI">Bloomberg</a>. A separate report on <a href="http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/940/Autonieuws/article/detail/920111/2009/07/07/Volkswagen-redt-Karmann-met-order-van-20-miljoen.dhtml">HLN.be</a> says that the EV deal is worth 20 million euros, the fruits of which are expected to go on sale in 2011. <br /><br />Earlier this year, Karmann showed off an EV concept called the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/05/01/e3-limousine-karmanns-all-electric-concept-on-tap-for-hannove/">E3 Limosine</a>, co-developed with utility company Oldenburg Energy Group (EWE). Last October, Karmann said it would help build some of <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/10/06/karmann-to-build-duracar-quicc-diva-for-german-market/">DuraCar's Quicc! DiVas</a> EVs. <em>Thanks to Frederik for the tip!</em><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/">eBay Find of the Day: electric 1974 Karmann Ghia</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/cd2d_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/d22f_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/dcf7_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/da3e_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/ebay-find-of-the-day-electric-1974-karmann-ghia/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/!bodbv(qbwk~$(kgrhgookjeejllmz(zqbjuz)oerv!~~_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&amp;sid=aISfxjjVYOuI">Bloomberg</a>, <a href="http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/940/Autonieuws/article/detail/920111/2009/07/07/Volkswagen-redt-Karmann-met-order-van-20-miljoen.dhtml">HLN.be</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/08/report-karmann-saved-by-vws-multi-million-euro-order-for-elect/">REPORT: Karmann saved by VW's multi-million euro order for electric vehicles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 08 Jul 2009 17:58:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Mike and Maaike's Autonomobile - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />In Possible Future Scenario #317-B, San Francisco industrial design firm Mike and Maaike presents the atnmbl (get it? - "autonomobile"). Less a car than an autonomous, seven-person mobile living room, the atnmbl is billed as a complete redesign of the car for those who believe that the ideal driving experience is <span style="font-style: italic;">not</span> driving. <br /><br /><span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/08/google-phone-designers-plot-for-the-end-of-driving-with-autono/'; </script> <script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>Essentially an all-wheel-drive Internet sitting room, the solar and electric atnmbl asks you where you want to go and then takes you there. Speed and acceleration are "irrelevant considerations," time savings is the key - that is, unless you ask the atnmbl to take the scenic route. Since you're not driving, you'll need something to do during the trip, hence the Internet browsing screen and open-source software architecture to download apps, social networking capabilities, and... a bar. <br /><br />Mike and Maaike don't predict seeing the atnmbl until 2040, which gives you some time to enjoy having to leave your couch to go camping. As for such a thing actually materializing, coming from the folks who designed the <a href="http://www.mikeandmaaike.com/home.html">Google Phone</a>, and with, perhaps, the ears of Google's muckamucks, well, hey, who knows.
