Ford has promised a “well-equipped all-electric pickup” on its upcoming Universal EV platform
The compact pickup truck segment has already been taken by storm with the massively popular Ford Maverick, which fetched over 130,000 sales last year in the United States alone. Now that the segment is set to be far more saturated in the coming years, with whispers through the grapevine suggesting we might see offerings from Toyota, Ram, and even General Motors, Ford may look to EV power to stay ahead of the rest in this increasingly in-demand segment. As reported by our very own Paul Eisenstein, Ford hopes to release a fully electric four-door pickup truck with a $30,000 price target by 2027, using its revolutionary new “Universal EV” platform.

This new platform will utilize a modular production process to efficiently produce various EVs that offer cutting-edge technology at accessible price points. It’s said that this platform will spawn a compact, four-door pickup truck, as well as a small SUV, with potentially more to follow. I can’t help but wonder what Ford’s small but mighty electric pickup truck would look like, so I’ve played around with some renders for the sake of imaginative visualization.
Using Midjourney 7.0, Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, and Adobe Photoshop, I take an imagined look at what Ford’s upcoming fully electric compact pickup truck might look like, combining styling elements of contemporary Ford products with the proportions and amenities of a small truck. These renders are purely fictional and in no way represent any actual Ford products.

What could Ford’s compact EV pickup look like?
Using a European-market Ford Capri EV as a reference, Ford’s all-electric compact pickup truck will likely fit somewhere between the Maverick and the Ranger in terms of size. Although information about powertrains is limited, we do know that Ford plans to use lithium-ion-phosphate battery packs with 400-volt architecture, which will be “produced at a new Ford plant being set up in Marshall, Michigan,” according to Paul Eisenstein. Although these EV systems will be built with efficiency and cost in mind, I anticipate they’ll still offer plenty of power and, of course, instantaneous torque response.

Ford’s electric pickup truck must offer a respectably-sized bed to be taken seriously by pickup truck buyers, which might be easier to accomplish by using an electric motor only on the front axle, freeing up space over the rear axle for cargo capacity. Although this would limit the electric pickup’s ability to offer four-wheel drive, it would at least ensure the truck will be as competitive as possible when it comes to payload capabilities. Perhaps one day a “Lobo-like” dual-motor performance version will be made available, just for the fun of it, but who really knows what to expect? I have a feeling that even without two motors and four-wheel drive, a compact EV pickup truck from Ford could fare well in a straight-line drag race against even the sportiest Maverick variant.

Final thoughts
However Ford’s electric compact pickup truck ends up turning out, it’s safe to say that it’ll be a milestone achievement for the brand once it arrives, as long as its price target is achieved and there are no flaws with its revolutionary build process. Considering how much hype the Bezos-backed Slate Auto pickup truck managed to stir up when it was first unveiled, it’s unlikely that Ford’s affordable EV ute will go unnoticed by the truck-crazy public, and it’s sure to be a hit with EV buyers who want some extra capability for their money.
