That’s the opinion of College for Creative Studies President Richard
Rogers at a roundtable on design held by J.D. Power and Associates. Rogers sees the influence of video games into car
design in the next 5 to 10 years. He is expecting more futuristic designs to become closer to production. The
roundtable highlights an important trend in the automotive industry. Creating unique vehicles that attract buyers into
the emotional side of a vehicle is key for an automaker’s success. While vehicles like the Toyota Camry and Honda
Accord sell despite their styling, vehicles like the Chrysler 300, Ford Mustang, and Mini Cooper are desirable for
their style. It will be interesting to see how future designs attract buyers. Right now, the more popular vehicles are
not really pushing the envelope as far as style is concerned, especially with the three that I listed. The article has
a list of cars that people buy because of their design, as well as a top 10 ‘ugliest’ vehicles list. Beauty is in the
eye of the beholder.
