Compact sedans are having a strong year in the U.S., with sales gains for models like the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3 so far in 2026. The Kia K4 and Hyundai Elantra are corporate cousins that also feature in this segment, with each offering a bit more design flair than their Japanese rivals. Now that Kia and Hyundai have each released their latest sales figures, which sedan is proving more popular with Americans? The Elantra or the K4? Here, we’ll compare their sales figures and see if they align with which one is actually the better buy.
K4 Vs. Elantra Sales

Kia

Hyundai
While sales of the Kia have remained relatively flat in 2026, the Hyundai has seen an increase over 2025. It’s worth mentioning that Kia still posts combined sales of the Forte/K4; the K4 replaced the Forte for the 2025 model year, but a small number of Fortes likely remain on dealership floors, which is why these two models’ sales are reported as a combined total.
| August 2026 | August 2025 | % Change | 2026 YTD | 2025 YTD | % Change | |
| Kia K4/Forte | 12,881 | 12,091 | +6.5% | 98,554 | 98,814 | -0.3% |
| Hyundai Elantra | 17,747 | 15,282 | +16% | 114,701 | 102,404 | +12% |
The current Elantra was introduced for the 2021 model year and is on the verge of replacement. Despite that, it has opened up a wider gap over the K4 in 2026. The Elantra is 16,146 cars ahead through August; it held a slender lead of just 3,590 cars at the same point a year ago.
The Hyundai’s numbers are even more impressive when you consider that the K4 is available in both sedan and hatchback body styles, whereas the Elantra is only sold as a sedan. Evidently, the Hyundai is the more popular model in this category right now.
Hyundai Elantra Vs. Kia K4 Comparison: Pricing and Powertrains

Hyundai

Kia
Could the Hyundai’s sales lead have anything to do with a pricing advantage or superior specs? Here’s a look at what each model costs, based on 2026 sedans only.
| Hyundai Elantra | Kia K4 |
| SE: $22,825 | LX: $22,290 |
| SEL Sport: $23,950 | LXS: $23,390 |
| SEL Sport Plus: $24,450 | EX: $24,490 |
| SEL Sport Premium: $25,275 | GT-Line: $25,490 |
| Limited: $27,375 | GT-Line Turbo: $28,390 |
| N Line: $29,600 |
Pricing for each model is similar, with the K4 starting at just $535 less. Both cars have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. This engine is found on most trim levels, and while it’s reliable and efficient, it provides zero thrills. A 1.6-liter turbo-four is available optionally. For the K4, it’s available in the GT-Line Turbo at $28,390. You have to spend over $1,000 more to get an Elantra N Line turbo. In the K4, this engine makes 190 hp/195 lb-ft, while the Elantra N Line is a bit stronger with outputs of 201 hp/195 lb-ft.

Kia
All models with the 2.0-liter engine have a CVT, but the Elantra N Line gets a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. In the K4 GT-Line Turbo, there’s an eight-speed automatic.
The Elantra has one major advantage in that it’s available with a hybrid. Priced between $25,650 and $30,000, it’s exceptionally economical and can return up to 54 mpg combined. Hyundai doesn’t publish separate figures for Elantra Hybrid sales, but they likely make up a meaningful percentage of all Elantra sales.
Hyundai also sells the spicy Elantra N with 276 hp. It’s a proper riot and Kia has no direct alternative in the K4 lineup.
2026 Kia K4 Vs. 2026 Hyundai Elantra: Design, Features, and Practicality

Kia

Hyundai
The Hyundai Elantra may be older, but its edgy design with heavy creases throughout the body remains striking. The N Line and N models are particularly sporty with their unique wheels and body kits. The Kia K4 is fresh and modern, but it looks a bit ungainly in profile. It’s a lot sportier in hatchback form.
Being the newer car, the K4 has a much more impressive infotainment system. It gets a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen and an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The Elantra has a smaller eight-inch touchscreen as standard, but upper trims have a 10.25-inch display. A 10.25-inch digital cluster is available.

Kia

Hyundai
Both cars are available with synthetic leather upholstery, heated/ventilated front seats, and premium sound systems. They have a similar amount of interior space; the Elantra’s trunk measures 14.2 cubic feet to the K4’s 14.6-cubic-foot trunk.
Final Verdict: Hybrid Powertrain Keeps Elantra Ahead

Hyundai

Kia
The senior Hyundai Elantra more than holds its own against the fresh-faced Kia K4. The availability of an ultra-efficient hybrid is perhaps the Elantra’s key advantage, and may explain why it’s outselling the K4 right now; many mainstream automakers have seen hybrid demand increase in 2026. The Elantra is also available with a top performance model, which the Kia doesn’t have.
If you’re after a non-hybrid model, the case for the Kia strengthens. It’s slightly cheaper, its turbo offering is better value, and it has more up-to-date tech than the Hyundai. It’s also the only car here to be offered as a sporty and practical hatchback. If Kia can add a hybrid powertrain, we expect a healthy boost in K4 sales.
